I have a blued Service-Six that I bought on my 21st B-day at the LGS after leaving the drivers license office with my new 21 year old license.

Mine is way too ugly to photograph, but as far as learning about them.... they can be disassembled using only a dime, and the old security sixes did not have adjustable sights. Sorry, that's all I have. Enjoy

They are very no-nonsense, toughly built and effective revolvers. Ruger replaced them with the GP100 mainly because the Six-series were much more expensive to produce.

Not a great picture, but heres mine-

Jealous! I had one slip through my fingers due to some shady business with an absentee bid at an auction house. It was a early 6in barrel blued, fixed sight model. Still kicking myself for not going to that auction.

Finally talked her into it, but she wouldn't pose without her big brother. (She is very self conscious about her pitting)

Yeah, I have one. It looks just like Blue Brick's (post # 8) - it's stainless, 4" barrel, and even wears the same Pachmayer grips like Blue Brick's.
I bought mine used, a long time ago. And as strange as this sounds, I bought it knowing full well it had some problems - it didn't take much thumb pressure on the hammer to push it off when it was cocked. I figured someone had done some kitchen table gunsmithing on it.
However, I got the gun for a song so to speak, and the first thing I did was box it up and ship it back to Ruger. I was honest about it too. I told Ruger that I'd bought the gun used, knowing it had some problems, and figuring I'd pay for having it fixed.
I was quite surprised (and pleased) when my Security Six came back a few weeks later - "No Charge." Ruger had replaced the hammer and some trigger parts, and didn't charge me a dime.
Unfortunately, I've heard that Ruger has quit even stocking parts for their great Security Six line of revolvers. So I guess if mine breaks down again, I'll just be out. That's okay though - I've already gotten my money's worth out of it.

I'm thinking of adding one to my revolver family soon. Congratulations on yours!

Had a pair of them but traded off the 6 inch.


Recently snagged a GP100 to go with the 3 inch Security Six:

I love mine, I've been shooting since I was 12, but this is my first revolver. Mine came to me wearing the Pachmyar rubber grips. I thought it would look better wearing some wood target grips, and it does, but shooting 357 became very uncomfortable. So it is back to wearing the snow tires.
It's been fantastic so far

Mine is an early model. I picked it up at a LGS about 9 months ago. I paid to much for it , but was in nice shape and I wanted one before the GP's came out. Shoots nice

In Spring'73, a few months after my 21st birthday, I purchased a 150- model 4" blue Security Six.

A couple of years later, I sold it to a friend (for what I had paid for it, $125[?]) who reeeeeeeally liked it ... and, shortly thereafter, replaced it with a 151- 2¾" stainless 151- model. That one got away from me, too, also to a close friend (this time, a gift).

You've got a good solid revolver that will serve you well for years. Then your kids, and probably your kids, kids can use it too.

I've owned a couple/three of them over the years. I know I had a 4" Security-Six, and a 2 3/4" Speed-Six (Security-Six had adjustable sights, Speed-Six fixed sights). I'm a Smith & Wesson guy, but back in the day the Ruger "Six" revolvers were less expensive than Smith and Wesson or Colt. And $50.00 was a LOT of money in those days.

I've traded/sold them off over the years, but when Ruger stopped making them, I lost all interest in Ruger's revolvers.

The Service, Police, and Speed sixes had fixed, Security had adjustable I'm 99% sure.

Sold the 4" that I owned for 20 years,and sorry that I did.

But inherited a 2 3/4 " blue model and will not let that slip away.

They are "bulletproof" and can take decades of actually shooting magnum loads.

Love shooting her with full house magnums,they rock.

Enjoy her,and dont let her go.

And if you get a chance to get the Speed 6 or Service 6,do so.

I found a used stainless, 6" Security Six at the local Cabelas a couple of months ago. I don't think it was shot much since it was in such good shape and the cylinder locks up like a tank. I like it better than the GP100, the trigger is much smoother. Even though I mostly shoot 38 specials, it handles full power commercial 357s comfortably. I'm sure you're going to enjoy it.

In reality, there were some early Security Six models that did have fixed sights but they were offered with adjustable sights too like those on the OP's.

My wife has a 4 " SS Security Six in .357 with the factory target grips, a 2 3/4 " blue Police Service Six in .357 and we have together a 4 " blue Police Service Six in .357. Though they are certainly strong enough to handle full magnum loads my hand loads which are .38 Special +P+ power level in mag cases are more comfortable in them. I make a warmer, 90 % power level .357 mag load for my GP100.

That looks like one of the early models that has a serial number that starts with 150. I really like the purple hue that shows in the 1st picture in the sun.
