Years ago, a techie with the NRA showed me his Ruger Security-Six. He'd had a Model 19, but after the first 2,000 or so hot .357 rounds, he had to have it retimed. After another 2,000 he had to retire it to shooting .38 Spc. But he saw the light and got a Ruger Security-Six and wrote an article for the American Rifleman on .357s in general, and he photographed about eight models in production at the time for it. But the interesting thing is that he put some round-butt grips on his Security-Six, traced them, then ground them and put on Pachmayr Compacts. I loved his 4-inch and tried it on one of my Security-Sixes. I don't think I'd do it on my 6-inch model, but on a 4-incher it's a great idea.

Any thoughts? Anyone else done it?

Honestly, that Ruger version of a round butt is pretty halfway done IMO. So modifying it to Rugers version of their round butt is also half arsed. I would round it out a lot more and make it even more concealable. True, you would have to modify any grips as well but that is the price you pay for fixing factory foibles.

I use to put Pachmayr Presentation grips on my Security Six. They fit my hand much better than the factory wood grips. If Ruger had offered a round butt version in the Security Six I would have bought it as I liked that configuration on my Speed Six.

Mine wears the factory "Big Grips," IMO they are a thousand times better than the skinny "Service" types- though only appropriate for belt carry, of course-

I have two security guns both with 4" barrels. And like the others have said I wouldn't change mine. I have a first year run made in late 1972 and need to get a Tyler T-Grip like in Indigo's picture. The factory grip is a little small for me and there are no atfter market grips for that frame I can find. My 1986 version has the "coke Bottle" style grips on it. I like it. Both of mine are blued.

My two Sixes. The shorty started life as a 4" DAO that was a police trade in. Wanted the shorter barrel but left the butt squared. Makes a good heavy carry.

My Avatar shows the original.
