Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

Always pays off to inspect stuff like that! If you see something, say something, right? Glad you noticed the drag contact and slight bind of the front screw!

Is that 6BRA?

I didn't get a whole lot of long range shooting in this year but I did get to do some 223 load development. 77 SMK with 8208 is shooting well in my AR, two 5 shot groups averaged .76"

I had an older 6-24 Gen1 Vortex PST on my 6BR and moved it to a 223. It was acting a little funky when I went to zero it, taking 2-3 shots for the scope to settle in after adjustment. Time for an RMA.

The 6BR got the dust blown off and I tried some 105 RDF bullets. No groups on paper but I shot steel at 2 and 300 yards and the splatter marks from 3 shots were touching.

Very nice. I had the opportunity to shoot a 6 Dasher over the weekend. The owner of the rifle said he was using Varget and 105 Berger Target bullets. It was a great shooting rifle with a Triggertech Diamond set at 6 oz.

I still shoot my 6x47L most of the time when shooting beyond 800, but the 6BR is fun and very accurate. With Hornady 105 BTHP and RL15, my son used it to beat a 260, 7 Mag, and 6.5C in a little fun competition we put together with some friends. He was the only one to get a hit on the 1000 yard target because he did a better job reading the miserable wind conditions that day.

Recently I started reading about guys making match ammo on their progressive press and I want to try doing that with the 6BR. They are still trickling the powder charge but everything else is done on the press, including sizing.

RL15 is good powder and one of my favorites, but like you said, there is variance from lot to lot for some reason. Because Varget and RL15 is so hard to come by, I have been working on a load with Shooters World Precision and 112 Match Burners and will post some results. I am not counting on the MB's to be as good as Bergers but hopefully they will give the 6BR a little more distance.

I would say the 6BR and variants are as easy to find a stable, accurate load for as is the .308 win.

They use the same powders, so I wonder if that has something to do with it

Varget always seems to be the answer but my most accurate load ever for my 6BR was with 8208XBR and 105 Nosler Custom Competition. Velocity was in the low 2600 fps but it shot a .21" group at 100. The only reason I tried it was because I happened to have it in the powder measure. 8208 has been one of my favorite powders for 223 and is now becoming unobtainable like varget.

For my 6BRA the magic has come with H4895, which is a kissing cousin to 8208XBR

I have 16 lbs of N140 and want to try it.

I'll add this, with the 6BRA it seems everyone finds their node ~2,920. My rifle was no exception

What is your bullet weight bullet or doesn't it matter?

I've shot 105 Hybrids, 108 BT Targets and the new 109 LRHT. By a slight margin, the 108s shot the best for me. All found their most accurate node in the low 2,900 fps area.

I switched from the 6 br to the bra this year, quite pleased so far and as others have posted the 2920 fps node seems to be the magic number.
I use the 105 class bthp

I had not turned any case necks until this rifle so that's new experience , a friend gave me a fire form barrel so that saves BL for sure.

I could start a thread on how I "did not " save money turning and fire forming my own brass rather than just paying DJs Brass service

A friend sold me a bottle of Varget so I loaded up some with 105 RDF's and went down to test them at the range. I shot four 3 shot groups. The two at 100 were ragged holes so I shot steel at 300 and made two tight splatter marks. I'm going to take them to the long range today to try out.

I typically like to shoot 5 shot groups but in the interest of ammo conservation, I reduced my shots.

IIRC Stan Taylor was and maybe Dusty Stevens, that probably saves a ton of time over false shoulder and FF

I read threads on Peterson/Dasher also but no experience with them

I started off with the day with a new 6BR load, 105 Hornady BTHP with 27.4 grains of SW Precision. I held dead center of the head at 220 yards. My shot is the one with the yellow dot next to it, and it hit low as the gun is zeroed for the 105RDF/Varget.




Next up was 300, still low, and this time a litte right. I didn't feel great about the shot and probably pulled it a touch right.



Sent one at 400. Again, yellow dot is me.



500 yard steel got another 105 BTHP and then I put a 105 RDF on the 600. Dead on with Strelok.


Up next was a ram at 825. Wind had started to push from the right so I held on his tail just to see how much. I put two on it. It's kind of strange how one bullet blew up more than the other.
