Good Article on the .44 Special

Good article. I buy 255 gr. Thompson-style HP's mail-order (currently running a 4 MONTH delay on all orders!) for .44 magnum in the T/C's 10" barrel but I haven't tried them in a Special... yet. :)

My Specials are all medium framed Rossi/Taurus revolvers so I'll need to stick with standard pressure loads but, those should be sufficient for anything I want to do with a .44Spl.

I wonder how they'd do in a .44-40? I tried a 230gr. LFP in my Uberti/Remington 1895 and the results were disappointing. If anyone has an idea, I'll try it out.

I came upon it looking for information about the 185 SWC-HP’s I ordered. Not the same bullet but the load data was a godsend. I am looking to reproduce the FBI load in .44 Special. The bullets I ordered were the same that Buffalo Bore uses.

The "fbi" load and the buffalo bore load are 2 different things. The FBI used a hollow based hollow pointed swc bullet.

The FBI kept tight control's on their revolvers cylinder gaps and this load did +/- 950fps out of their 4" bbl'd revolvers.

Buffalo bore uses a thompson style gc'd bullet.

The forster case trimmer is an excellent tool to keep around, it can do more than trim cases. It can hp bullets using a 1/16" bit for rifle, 1/8" bit for pistol. But I like to use a 3/16" 60* center drill to make huge hp's in cast/coated/plated/soft nosed jacketed bullets.

A lyman 429422 cast bullet, the 429422 is a keith style swc that has a hollow based pin. I used the forester 60* hp tool to make a hp in the hb bullet. The end result is a FBI style hollow pointed, hollow based swc.

Enter buffalo bore's "hot 38spl load" 20a which does +/- 1000fps with that 158gr thompson bullet in snubnosed revolvers. +/-1000fps is very doable with 2400 in a snubnosed ca 44spl. These loads are in the 18,xxxpsi range

I've done a lot of testing/shooting 44cal hp's over the decades. Been thinning the herd the last couple of years selling of 4 different hp molds along with 2 sets of swaging dies that had hp nose forming dies.

Do yourself a huge favor and get a forester trimmer and then get the hp tools. Making your own hp's out of commonly sold bullets is a huge plus.

I had an employee who was complaining about having a 44 hp mould that wouldn't throw a decent bullet. I have him ten bucks for it. Lyman 429421. I cleaned it, smoked it, preheated it and the first bullet out was perfect. Killed a few woodchucks and raccoons with it. I developed a way to use pure lead and load 44 specials that expand an don't lead.
