The M1 Garand Rifle - Why Is It, "Heavy"?

I’d love to see your explanation as to how my post was obscure, unclear or unintelligent. Let me make it as simple as humanly possible for you. The M1 Garand is completely and totally outclassed by more modern options. I’m sorry that you are stuck in 1942, but the rest of the world has moved on and now uses weapons far superior to the Garand and we have been doing so for decades. The Garand is OBSOLETE as a fighting rifle. Period.
While I agree the M1 Garand is obsolete as to what we have available today I guess we can say the same about a 66 GTO or 66 Corvette but I would not mind having either anymore than having a nice M1 Garand. I ride a 92 Harley which I like and there are plenty of newer better bikes to choose from. While I agree as a fighting rifle today the Garand is well out classed but as far as having a nice rifle the Garand, like the classic cars or motorcycles will always have their place. However, it is nice with a Garand or M14 to be able to reach out and touch well beyond the effective range of an M16.

I don’t disagree with anything you just posted.

Again, this is one of the reasons I do not and have never understood this forum. Maybe it's just not the place for me and I should just stop posting.

Sometimes a forum just doesn't fit a member. I've stepped away from several forums over time, whether firearms related or not. In some cases I'd just fade away, in other cases I'd go cold turkey and lock myself out. In all cases I checked myself out quietly. No reason for me to rant my way out the door as that would have just made the members and mods glad I left, when I'd rather be the one that was glad that I left.

Regarding THR, compared to many firearms forums, this place has plenty of traffic. The forums that are brand specific or gun type specific tend to move at a slow crawl compared to here. And yes, we've come to know how this place is moderated, but I don't recall the mods here acting emotional with ban hammers like I've seen at other forums.

What do you consider "rifle range" and why do assault rifles suck at those ranges?

It turns out that in real life, men wearing drab clothing and trying not to be shot don’t hang out for very long in the open.

Which is why most (not all but most) rifle shots are taken at below 300m.

3-5 seconds is a life time when someone is shooting at you...

So you never have to reload your assault rifle?

And, if you do, how long does it take to pull-and-stow a mag?

Again, your hyperbole leads back to...

Hector Cafferata...
... time stamp 20:30.

...The LR308 bests the M1 Garand in both categories though, so it’s a moot point...

And what's the cost of that rifle, and which Army is fielding it?

The M1 rifle works, Two wars proved that.

CQB out to 500 yds.

It's $750 delivered.

It doesn't have to be the best.

... It just has to work.

Why did the DM programs come about in SCA...?

Assault rifles.

Why is the Army lookin' at a new 6.8mm high velocity round and rifle to replace them?

Assault rifles.

What's old is new again.

The Holbrook Device - is part you can purchase, and swap in when desired.
A modified clip is cheaper and easier. You don't even have to disassemble the rifle. I used one shooting DCM matches.

Carlos Hathcock - kept an entire NVA company armed w/ AK-47's pinned down in a rice patty for two days... w/ a .30-06...
..and a PRC and a battery of artillery

With the mag fed guns you at least have options. I can drop the mag, or I can stow the mag.

I can also reload an AR before the empty mag hits the ground, and Im still three reloads ahead of an M1 shooter with that one mag change.

You keep missing the point too, that there are people who were actually issued and used M1's and M14's in combat, that still preferred the M16's/AR's over them, and for good reason.

Id be willing to bet Hector would too. ;)

They brought back the highly modified M14's (notice it wasnt the M1;)) as a stop gap until they could get something better, and they did get something better.

You also seem to miss that the AR platform of guns has been the longest-running issue rifles our military has used, and that doesn't appear to be changing any time soon. Might be a message in there somewhere if you pay attention. ;)

We get it, you like your M1, and those of us that have and/or have had them in the past like them too. At some point though, maybe when you gain some more experience with other things, youll come to realize, there's a reason why they haven't been a general issue rifle since the 50's.

This is not a stopwatch tournament or assault course.

Fighting from cover, with accurate sustained fire, will care little b/t clip or magazine fed rifles.

“I wish I needed three rounds to do what one 30-06 does.”

How much deader does something have to be? The ought six is great if you need to kill the enemy soldier 175% dead vs just 100%.;) I'm not a soldier, never was, but the feedback I've got from folks that have used it in combat is that the 5.56 worked just fine especially with the ammo used in the fifteen years (or thereabouts). As one SPECOPs guy that runs a fairly well known training company said, "I've killed a LOT of people with 5.56". By your logic a .375 Ruger battle rifle would be even better, right? And a .458 Win Mag better still.

The M1 rifle...

...didn't need a 3-shot burst setting.

:D

Does the current M4 have a 3 shot burst? They probably hadn't invented that feature back in the days of the Garand. It was originally black powder wasn't it?

Since when do soldiers get to choose how they fight? I'm sure they would all like to fight from cover and deliver only "accurate sustained fire", but it is my understanding that the exigencies of the situation often dictate different tactics.

You're the one putting a clock on it. ;)

I've reloaded both enough to know which is the better choice too.
