It seems to me that if the cones on the black powder nipples were more cone shaped, they would help diminish cap problems. I could be wrong as my 82-year-old eyes are very weak, but it seems the cones we are using are more cylindrical or straight sided. If that is the case, then having them taper towards the tip would cause the cap to slay when it was pushed on them, while still maintaining a friction fit. The positive result would be that any back pressure would result in opening a path for gases to escape by lifting that splayed cap, reducing the effect of hammer blow back while loosening the cap at the same time. On the next cocking of the hammer that spent cap would then be more apt to fall free.
