One last, I hope, observation with the 1862. Hammer blow back.

Bibbyman, I use a #6 X 32 S.S. machine screw. I mark the depth of the cyl. ratchet recess at the hammer slot. I then note if the hammer safety notch is centered or to one side. Drill and tap just in front of the measured recess depth. Cut the screw head off and grind or sand (I use a 1" belt sander, screw chucked in a drill motor) the threads off about a 1/4" or so, leaving just the shaft. Cut the bare shaft off leaving about 3 rows of threads. Install the post in the frame with red locktite. Allow time for it to set and then using a cut-off wheel, adjust the height of the post even with the top of the nipple on the cylinder then shave the sides of the post as needed to clear the notch in the hammer. Use a cutoff wheel to slot the hammer to clear the post.

Should I post a pic of the 1862 you did for me Mike?

Mike aka 45 Dragon,

Asking for details on the "cap post" you install. You have left a good many clues and pictures but there are a few specific details left out. Would you please elaborate? I'm considering installing them on my Pietta 1860s.

You said somewhere you use a stainless steel screw. What thread size? Does head style matter?

Do you "profile" the post before installing?

Loctite?

Thanks in advance.
Mike did this 2nd Gen Colt 1862 Navy for me a few years ago.

Bibbyman, not sure. Looks like the same technique.

Thanks Dicky! Glad you posted that!!
On pocket guns, you don't have enough "meat" where the normal location would be so drill and tap just behind the recess measurement at roughly 45°. You will be drilling into the arbor too but there's nothing wrong with that. After you install the post and it has set up, the S.S. is soft enough to bend forward where the top of the normal install would be. Then dress the post accordingly.
Appreciate ya Dicky!!

Mike
