Hey guys picked up a norinco sks. Trying to get some information on it. I looked up on yooperj and all that, but I am curious of the year. It’s in great condition. Seems like it could be military but has signs that it’s commercial as well. All of the numbers match. It’s missing the bayonet. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks

Looks like a nice SKS, bayonets are available on EBay, make sure you get the complete set with spring, screw, etc. SKS’s are fun, I’m sure you’ll enjoy yours.

They are tough to date, either records are incomplete or unavailable.

Welcome to THR!

Thanks for the information and for the welcome! I’m pretty excited to get out and shoot it.

Yeah I agree. Ammo is expensive but 762 has stayed “reasonable.” Do you or anyone suggest getting stripper clips?

Nice find.

It looks like the bayonet mount on your rifle got cut off at some point, though. It's not needed except for show, so it really doesn't matter.

My favorite rifle in the "utility" section... As a personal weapon, I prefer the SKS to the AK, this after owning both, the two of them factory ChiCom.

The first thing I did on mine was to remove the bayonet, just adds weight for absolutely no returns... As for identification, can you get a clearer picture of the number and triangle cartouche?

Get stripper clips, but not the Chinese ones: look for those marked BXN, they're good quality (Czech if I'm not mistaken). Most Chinese clips are useless, I suspect they're junk made just to supply the US market, not milsurp.

Ya, skip the plastic "detachable" mags with the giant finger mount- more trouble than they are worth. Keep the 10-round fixed box mag and use strippers as Simonov intended. With some practice, stripper reloading is very fast.

The military models usually had a Bakelite (plastic) upper handguard and the barrel was threaded, not pinned, into the receiver. Even the commercial guns are tough and reliable.

Yours has nicer wood than most. Nice gun!

The clips that Norinco used to sell already loaded back in the '90s were good, but the ammo was junk. Now we have decent Russian ammo, but the current production clips stink.

OP- I might have some extra clips laying about. If I can find 'em, Ill send ya a couple.:)

Yeah it’s not attached anymore. It still has the lug for the cleaning rod. I thought about maybe getting g one welded? I don’t know if it’s worth it, but it would be cool.

Great information. I will start looking into it. Yeah without the bayonet it does make it much lighter. I’ll try to get you a few other pics.

Yeah let me know! I’d be happy to buy them off of you

Yes. But not the cheapies.

Hunt for some BXN marked stripper clips. These are Czech military and the best around. But buying the junk reproduction Chinese made clips is only asking for problems. But BXN clips are superb and the gun will load very smoothly and quickly with them.

It’s hard to tell but it is very similar to the 636B. Since it’s so faint is could be 606 or 636A. thank you for this info!

Hold on the bayonet, just want to make sure before you buy one. Just make sure you know what SKS you have, because a paratrooper SKS uses a shorter bayonet.

Also, make sure you buy the appropriate bayonet, whether it be the blade type or cruciform.

Okay cool. I’ll look into it before I make a quick purchase. I appreciate it thank you
