Is Alliant still in business?

Every time I go to my local store he has Alliant powders for sale. I was actually getting Sport Pistol from there regularly, but I guess the word got out. I knew I should've snagged more.

I talked to a guy today who said he has a friend that works for Alliant. He said they are very slow with their production and don’t really seem to care if they sell mass quantities or not.

I contacted Vista last month and they said to check with MidwayUSA for supplies. Vista Outdoors is planning to sell ammunition directly to customers just like Hodgden is selling powder directly to the users. When they do, I will contact them again and see if they can do the same for reloaders. If you try to contact them Vista is handling the PR and Marketing of all their products.

Instead of waiting for Vista, why don't we go to all Vista companies' websites and say "Hey" "Where is the product, like primers, powder, brass and wads" or whatever else you want and then mention your favorite local gun shop or Cabalas or MidwayUSA, etc.
If enough "loyal" customers complain maybe they will send product where more people can get it. It's too easy to call them, they just put you on hold. Emails from their websites are recorded and should deserve a reply.

I suspect that reloaders are a very small part of Alliant's business and we will see more availability as they catch up.

Or, you can repeat stuff like a friend of a friends first cousin works there and said.........

Last week, the guy at 10 Ring said they had just recieved their first shipment from Alliant in a long time. They had about 6# each of Green and Red Dot, but no Blue, and a 8# keg of 2400. I need the Blue Dot. :(

Quite a few of my pet loads use Alliant powders. I've had to start again w/ load development using other brands. I would rather use the time in actual shooting, but.... At any rate I can say that W 231 is a very useful handgun powder.

In the 3+ decades that I've reloaded, Alliant powders have always had spotty availability. That's one of the reasons I used mostly Hodgdon powders for many years.

Although, I really like 2400 in many reduced rifle cast loads. Fortunately, when Powder Valley had some a few weeks ago i managed to snag an 8 pounder.

Did Vista decide to just give up and put their business resources elsewhere?
Oh, I don't think so.

Keep in mind Vista Outdoor (Used to be ATK) owns many companies including Federal, CCI/Speer, Blazer in addition to Alliant Powders and likely been busy filling contract/OEM orders.

These are exactly reasons why I started the same/comparable powder thread so I could have ready backup when my primary choice of powder was not available (Admin Derek is still working on bringing back "Search" option but here's older archived thread) - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...-different-labels.797388/page-5#post-10644897

And yes, after identifying comparable powders, definitely conduct load development before the shortage.

Of course, it goes without saying that when reloading components are in stock and prices lower, do stock up on your preferred components.

I'm in ATK country, the old ATK dating to the cold war, and deep roots with the new ATK/Vista/Honeywell/DRS and some other places that make interesting things and have very tight security. My home rifle range abuts their proving grounds for things much bigger than Bullseye. I shoot with folks up to the VP level from Federal Cartridge. Word on the street early on in the shortage was that Federal loading components under the Vista/ATK/Speer etc logo would be tough to come by until the backlog of FC ammo orders were filled. This was the case in the last shortage, and no doubt the case in this one as well.

Which is what I asked: did Vista give up on making canister powder and put their resources elsewhere - such as boxed ammunition for non-distribution contracts, government buyers, foreign sales, and such. Your answer seems to be, “Yes.”

Kinda weird. I can understand if Vista as Alliant decides to fill ammunition orders first but, that’s not typically affected canister products. Those aren’t typically used for boxed ammo.

I don't think it's weird at all. Canister powders are simply individual lots of bulk powders that test to consistent standards and are packaged up and sold to reloaders. If those bulk powders are being used by ammunition mfgrs as fast as they are produced by GD and others, they are not available to be sorted and sifted into cannister powders.

Just buy Hodgdon/Accurate powders. They can do anything Alliant can and their online data is much better. You can even call them and they answer,

We've been seeing mostly VV, IMR, Accurate, Ramshot, and Alliant around here. Not much for Hodgdon. Only Alliant powder I haven't seen (that I'm looking for at least) is AR Comp. I've picked up plenty of RL16, 23, 26, PP2000MR, PP Varmint in the past 6 months. Have seen Unique, Sport Pistol, and Power Pistol as well. As said before, I'm sure it'll start getting more available as Fed/Vista get caught up.
