For $500 I have the Savage A17 on my "wanna list" but it would get put into a Boyd's stock and that would bump it over $500, so probably doesn't qualify. There really isn't anything else on my wanna list that comes anywhere close to $500, sorry.

M38 Swedish Mauser (if I could find one for that price). 6.5X55 is a sweetheart cartridge and the WWII version of the Swede is a sweetheart rifle.

Last year I bought a Remington 700, a Ruger 10/22 and a Savage Axis all were new and in the $259 range each. Everything is different today. Both centerfires needed upgraded stocks and scopes.
If I had to buy another rifle I would be looking for a T/C Center or other sub 500 Rifle in .308. All the brands are pretty accurate. Oh I did a Del-Ton rifle for about that price as well. They have rifle kits on sale right now in the $400 range less reciever and sights. I have been very pleased with the ones I have put together.

Only the best;

SAKO M-39 Finish Mosin, 7.62x54r.

Good luck with that for $500, unless things are a lot cheaper in rural Alaska. I guess in a great circle sort of way you are closer to Finland.

I hear that snowmobiles can be pretty hard on them;)

Im sniffing one up as I beat keys, hopefully Ill get to have it sent via USPS as the receiver is an antique, a '94 Chattrault, with a '42 barrel and a wartime stock that only has a few dings and such. 400$ +shipping from a guy I have bought and sold to previously.

I do know, at todays prices, its a bargain, (!!) thats why Im alll over it.

Its not the snowgo thats hard on a good rifle, its the wife :D

Something pre-owned.
Dollars go a bit farther on the used market. Also, new prices are inflexible once you get a certain amount of money under MSRP. Used guns are infinitely flexible (in either direction) on price so whopping deals can be had.

Ditto. My last sporter purchase was a cherry postwar Husqvarna Mauser with an FN action in 8x57, for $300 even (w/iron sights, not counting the period optics and mount I added later.) That was about three years before Corona, however. Seems like a different age now ...

A older used Savage or Rem 700 270win would handle anything I need, and should come in enough to allow for a nicer used factory pull-off stock and in another year swap out the factory barrel for a nice pre-fit barrel in 280AI.

I'd buy a "beater" with a good action worthy of tunning up. You can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, but you gotta start with the right sow's ear.

Well, in Illinois I already have the only center-fire deer rifle allowed, a Savage 220. Before you go and say, " that's a shotgun,", consider, it is a Savage 110 with a rifled .617 bore(nominal). I guess I'd buy a ....heck, I have all the rifles and muzzle loaders I need, can I buy primers, powder and shot?

Did that Husky come drilled and tapped for the scope mount?

When I bought it there was an older pattern of scope base screwed and soldered to the left side of the receiver.

The only compatible rings I was able to find were too high and butt-ugly ...

...so I eventually removed this base myself, put fill screws in the holes and plugged the stock inlet, and then had a set Weaver bases installed.

I feel ya! I moved from Southern Illinois to Ohio last year. We can use straight wall cartridges here! Fixing me up a 350L for next year.

I figure IL will follow suit pretty soon. Or at least you guys do. At least pistol caliber rifles.

Ruger American. Bought rifle on sale at Rural King and bought one of the new Redfield scopes display model out of Cabelas bargain cave and some used Burris rings I had on hand I have about 500 bucks in my truck gun setup. Been using it for the past few years and it's a great low budget rig that I don't have to worry about.

As a fellow Illinois resident, I felt this!

One workaround to the IL rules for deer hunting that I learned of, you can set up an AR Pistol in 300 Blackout and use a single shot magazine insert and it is legal for firearm season. The IL Conservation Police confirmed the legality last year on Facebook, actually. If/when I get into firearm deer season, I may very well try that route. Right now I'm focused on gearing up for archery season, I'll see how I like that before investing in the AR Pistol setup (also want to wait out the current question on pistol braces before investing.
