"My friend Mike stopped by my shop today. He needed some work done. He had a gun case with him, saying he had something for me. He new I have always drool over his Daisy VL .22 cartridgeless rifle. Opened the case and told me it was mine. He already has one in mint condition in the box. But picked this one up in a lot he bought, knowing how much I have wanted one he gifted it to me."
I immediately found ammo and ordered 1000 rounds. 20210917_115236~2.jpg
 
Fascinating. Never heard of these before. Where do you get ammo for it and how does it perform compared to more common ammunition?
 
How neat. There appears to be a ton of ammo available much to my suprise, but no rifles to be found. You’re a lucky man. Let us know how it shoots!
 
I bought one new when they first came out...

It was VERY sensitive about the ammo, and if the tiniest piece was missing off the bullet, it would cause all kinds of flyers.

The ammo always had issues...so I sent it down the road.

Curious about the noise level.

Is it just the typical sound of a springer air rifle, or is there a crack from the bullet itself?

This is what you call a good friend.

A very good friend would have brought ammo...... Just sayin'. :) :)

Buddy of mine has one it is a lot of fun to shoot. I had no idea that these were made. Good buddy of yours. He’s a photo of the one I shot.

Pretty quiet, maybe 22 short from a rifle. The range I was at was indoors. Accuracy was ok on his. I didn’t have my chrony and don’t know about fps. Recoil is kinda weird. The most important this is it was fun to shoot.
 
Everything I've read about it says it has the power of a 22 short magnum or a lower grain 22 cartridge about 1200fps. It probably has The Recoil of the Springer before the fuel is ignited. I shoot Springer pellet rifles quite often so I imagine it is quite similar. You probably feel the recoil on the spring more than you do of the actual projectile firing.

I remember reading about these in the early 90's.
I would have thought the price for ammunition by now would have demanded scalper's prices... but only $110/1000? Just wow.
 
Being a single shot you have to cock every time they will last awhile.

I wonder (though I shouldn't as doing such usually gets me into trouble), if in a pinch, would it be possible to load such a rifle with heavy .22 pellets with a combustible material such as Vaseline pressed into the skirt? I know this will diesel in modern spring airguns and yield higher velocities, though it can eventually trash the gaskets.

Yeah, I can't have nice things because I "wonder" too much.
 
You would have to resize your .22 pellet the are 5.5 mm .22 rimfire 5.6 mm. The base of the pellet wound need to be expanded to keep pressure lose in check.but dieseling it with a petroleum would probably work.

Heres how the airgun part of the gun works. Dont think dieseling would be a problem. 05-14-21-06-Daisy-VL-description-drawing.jpg
 
Check the bore, particularly the throat area. The VL I had (tweeking thieves :cuss:) the throat was nearly square and the first part of the bore was rough. A bit of JB's would have helped accuracy quite a bit.
 
Too bad they quit fooling with it. Strikes me there were plenty of areas of improvement that could have brought it up to all-around practicality as a true firearm --including maybe a feed system.

And nothing in principle limits it to .22caliber.
