Upsetting gun shop experience

On one hand, I can understand that stance (but not the sentiment) for legal reasons - you don't want the news reporting your guns as being used in a gang shooting; that brings the ATF to your door. Depending on where this shop is located (ie local demographics and crime), I can understand not wanting to carry "brothah" guns.

On the other hand, that b*stard was certainly a racist, given his attitude.

it is the buisness owners right to be a bigot and an idiot. don't give him your money, spread the word about him to your friends, and leave it at that.

his actions are immoral IMO, but far from illegal.

I personally wouldn't want to have tec9's and other such guns for sale in my store(if I had one) though it has little to do with who's buying them, and more to do with who's watching me sell them, namely the ATF.

Don't hide arms, get sidearms!

LOL Great to find another Firesign fan on THR! "They never come up into the hills anymore!"

Look at the guy who posted this. He's got what?

All of 24 posts.

Surely you don't think his account is truthful and factual???

OMG!!!!!!

I sure hope that was sarcasm.

In the event that it isn't, your 800+ posts makes you... what?

"for this good old boy"

I'm offended by this comment;)

I work ocassionally at a shop, we "reserve" the right to not sell to anyone we care not to sell to, for any reason, or for no reason at all.

Just yesterday, one young baggy pants, worn around his knees, young man came in three times to buy a 24/7 45acp compact, but had forgot his license when I handed him a 4473 form. He left and came back, and had forgotten his license again. He left and came back again, this time with another young man who was dressed like he was.

The "new" guy with him said he was going to buy the 24/7 45acp with the original "looker' standing there. I informed him I'd need to see an AZ drivers license or identification card. He showed me his license and I jotted the name and lic # down on a piece of paper.

I then told him "NO you are not going to buy this gun or any gun in this shop" and handed his license back to him. He stepped back from the counter and wanted to know why. I explained to him that straw purchases were illegal, and my opinion was that he was buying the gun for the "looker" based on the summary of events.

He got a little beligerant and said he wanted to buy the gun and he wasn't buying for the "looker', he was buying it for himself. As well, why did I take his license information if I wasn't going to sell him the gun. I explained he was not buying that gun or any gun from the shop, period. He told me I couldn't prove he was buying it for the other guy, and I simply pointed to the sign above my head which states:

"We reserve the right not to sell a firearm to you for any reason we choose" and then proceeded to tell him if he came back into the shop again and attempted to buy a gun, the feds would be called and his name and pertinent information would be turned over to the feds. He could then talk to them when they came to his residence.

That goes both ways, we don't buy certain guns from "certain" people because that gun needs to sit until the sheriffs rep comes in and runs numbers on these private sales to the shop before we can put it out on the floor for sale.

We've not bought guns from mothers, brothas, tweekers [ based on their appearance and their having acquired the gun from a "friend", or someone they didn't know at a gun show, etc ], as well as men and women in casual business attire.

What comes into play in making the decision to buy or not to buy from private parties is their overal appearance and what they are trying to sell. Someone who comes in with baggies to their knees, piercings, wife beater shirts, and wanting to sell a 1000.00 Python isn't going to sell that gun to us.

Is that profiling? You bet!! Is that discrimination? You bet!!!! Is it the right of the shop owner to refuse to buy based on the probability the gun might be hot based on the totality of the circumstances? YOU BET!!!!!!!

I've sold guns to people with baggies, bandanas, wife beater shirts, people who were afro americans, whites, and even people who looked like they could be illegal mexicans. They have to fill out the form, they get checked by NICS and I don't care what they look like as long as NICS tells me "proceed" with the sale. What I won't do is sell to anyone who I believe to be violating the law in that regard.

Now my opinion is subjective at best. It's based on years of being an investigator on the streets, understanding the signs and signals that lead me to believe a straw purchase is a potential with that customer based on what I've observed, heard and just about anything else one can think of that gives me a "heads up" I don't want to chance a sale to that person.

"for this good old boy", I'm sitll offended by that comment:rolleyes: NOT

I think its fairly evident that the owner is racially prejudiced. Frankly, if you don't approve of that world-view, I would suggest that you make that your last visit into that establishment.

It's rare to meet someone that is SO rich that they actively take steps to avoid making more money. Hell, some of the richest people I know would still give themselves a heart attack to make a bit more.

But I do contend that it is the shopowner's right to have that world-view.

He also has the right to go out of business from his business decisions.

Now that said....

I DO hope that the same persons here who are screaming "Bigot!" are willing to give the same treatment to ANYONE that makes Racially-oriented, Racially-motivated, or Racially-favored comments REGARDLESS of that person's race.

We've seen a lot of racially-motivated issues recently and we have seen double-standards within our society's reaction to those events. I'd like to see us develop a consistent and ethical approach to people of ALL races and give no quarter to ANYONE. It is either OK for everyone and all bet's are off, or it is OK for NO ONE.

We haven't seen the outrage over Isiah Thomas' video-taped remarks over race in his sexual harrassment trial...

Even Whoopie Goldberg has questioned when Jessie Jackson will be offering his applogy to the falsely-accused Duke players. He marched and lead protests at the campus.... yet strangely he is silent on his actions.

My point?

We need to get outraged over ALL bigotry-- or get outraged over NONE.

The fastest way to get a thread on THR closed is start up a racial thread.

Frankly, they don't belong here.

Just pointing out what I have seen in stores in my area.

Younger black men *in the store* appear to be gangsters, with various levels of tattooing. They turn their hats sideways, depending on their Crip/Blood leanings, walk goofy, and sometimes display "the attitude".

I also see older men, professional middle class men, and obvious LEOs. No problem there.

Would you sell to someone who looks like a ganger or other scumbag? I wouldn't.

Feel free to have your stupid, PC reaction. But if it looks, acts, and talks like criminal scum, then, it's reasonable to come to the conclusion that the person IS a scumbag. I'm certainly not going to be *nice* to them; they're the reason I have to walk around armed in the first place. Some of you have forgotten that.

Ed A,

The correlation between the OP's post and mine is the shop owner has the right to not buy from anyone for any reason, whether that be the type of gun they want to sell, or who he thinks might be more inclined to then want to buy that gun at a later date.

More importantly, any gun that enters the shop and possibly bought by us which was obtained from a "friend" would/should be tracked on the hot sheet before it could be put out for sale. No one here knows how many times the owner had been audited for a variety of reasons [ those "reasons" could be a multitude of things leading the store owner to decide not to sell certain firearms in the future, that in the past could have led to being used in crimes later and an audit of said shop.

Believe me when I tell you, a BATF audit is not pleasant, and anything that may lead to that is to be avoided, and quite probably is avoided if one has gone through one. Gotta walk in that mans shoes before anyone states their own biased opinions of his reasons/actions in that regard.

This type of business is very strictly regulated by BIG brotha:D
