Roundball fun with the 30-30

This old gal is quite big ( read that as tough) so I’ll going to braise her in some chicken stock, tomatoes, onion, capers and olives and then eat her over some rice.

Not sure I’ve ever been as proud of a squirrel as I am this one
i’m coming over!

Of course, as you type this delicious sounding recipe I'm sitting here after wall-to-wall meetings eating my late lunch of plain spring mix and radish sticks.

Thanks. :cuss:

NB: pour about a half glass of white wine in with the braise. Squirrel and white wine go together like rice and Louisiana hot sauce.
InstaPot! get one, can soften any meat

Yes some wine will likely make an appearance. I enjoy the acidity it brings along with the tomato, and the saltiness of the capers and olives. Boy am I excited, it’s also one of my favorite ways to eat rabbits.

30-30 is the only rifle caliber I’ve seen people tinker with like this. Does anyone do this kind of thing with 308 or 30-06?

I bought some 115 gr Powder Coated .309 bullets to load in .30 Carbine. Was wondering how they would do, so loaded some .30-30 with a case full of Trail Boss. 9 yo grandson has a blast.

Thought WTH, try it, loaded some .30-06 full of Trail Boss, 115 gr @ 2550 fps, duplicates a mild .25-06. 16 yo grandson found it works great on deer.

Loaded some .223 with 5.0 gr Unique and 45 gr .22WMRF FMJ bullets @ 1900 fps. 1" and better @ 50 yards. Scope is dead on @ 50 and shooting 64 gr deer load, dead on @ 100, on adjustment. The .45 gr is quieter than .22 LR and squirrels don't like it.

This is the fun if reloading.

32cal 70 gr .312 plated pistol projectile pushed through a .308 sizing die, 10 gr Unique, 30-06 mil brass, LR mag primers.

Well, it’s the difference in whether you’re using groove or bore diameter to measure!

The British used bore diameter, and used .303”, and grooves are .312-.314”.
Likewise the 7.62x54 Mosin Nagant.
The .30/06 and .308 are .299-.300” bore (hence .30cal) but are .308” groove diameter!
Confused yet! (Some early.30/30’s are .307”!)
The .32acp is .309” +.002 or -.001”. But it’s a .32!!!

The .32 Colt was a heel type bullet (like .22rf) and was .33”, but the .32 S&W was .313”, as is the .32 S&W Long.
The .327Federal Magnum is .312”!

So, YOU should have been CORRECT! It should be .32 Super!
But, S&W chose to call it a .30 Super Carry....

We’ll give you a “C” , and a (deleted!). for “participation”......

(I’d rather sit in the corner with a dunce cap, myself! And mutter, that’s what I get for opening MY mouth!)

I used to do a lot of plinking with a Model 94 and reloads using the Speer 100gr. half-jacketed "plinker" bullet many years ago, when components were cheap. Using sized lead balls seems like a great idea!

ooooh man, I just learned the .44 and .45 ad 45/70, conundrum …. why can’t they just put it in millimeters

Figured I’d post this to make the story complete.
I was lucky enough to get a cottontail yesterday morning , unfortunately I didn’t have my 30-30 at the time so I did not use the roundball, but looking at the damage on the squirrel I’d be willing to shoot a coyote sized animal with it.
