PPQ M2 22lr vs M&P 22lr Compact

The MP 22 Compact is 30% smaller than the standard MP 9mm, so it's not going to be a nearly identical, save caliber, trainer.

Mine has been perfectly reliable with standard ammo. Being smaller, it fits my kids' and wife's hands well, but not mine, so much.

I have no experience with the others listed.

I have a Plastic M&P Compact .22. It is been 100% with MiniMags and has been reliable with most others since a few hundred rounds of "break in."
I bought it because it is US made and had better reviews than the Umarex full size gun; but apparently those got better before being discontinued.

I have handled but not shot a PPQ .22. It has a superior trigger.

People are waiting on and snapping up the Sig P322 to get its 20 round magazine, I have not seen one in person.

I have a Walther PPQ .22 threaded version and it is a superb pistol. A different level of quality from the P22 of Walther. It is very reliable, suppressed and unsuppressed, with the great Walther ergos and trigger.

I don't have any experience with the M&P 22.

I have the S&W M&P 22 Compact, and have been very pleased with it. Incredibly lightweight and sufficiently accurate, it has been extremely reliable with almost every type ammo I have tried in it, with the sole exception being Winchester (which I swore off years ago). Far superior to the older Walther P22 I sold off that was only okay with CCI MiniMags.

I've got the M&P 22 compact. It's a great pistol. But I must admit, the second I can get a Sig p322, I'm selling my M&P to purchase one.

I have had several PPQ 22s, and have been pleased with them. They are virtually identical with the 9mm versions just lighter. Trigger probably not as good as 9mm versions, but are not actually a true Walther product as they are built in the Arnsburg Germany factory owned and operated by Umerex, (and just stamps the Walther name on it as they own Walther) which makes many of the 22lr versions for many Brand name Gun manufacturers. Quality from this Arnsburg factory is spotty. Anything made in the Ulm factory is the original Walther factory and supplies the 9mm and up caliber for LE and military contracts for Walther around the world. Umerex also tries to confuse buyers now by manufacturing much of a firearm in Arnburg toy plant then doing a final assembly in the Ulm plant just to get the Ulm stamp. So do a little research before buying your latest Walther product. Virtually all current 9mm and up PPQs, PDPs and PPS's are fully made in the Ulm plant.

Got a look at and a few rounds with a P322 today. Second best factory striker fired trigger pull after PPQ, natural point of aim for 1911 shooter, biggest magazine of the type. Kind of light weight but that is just part of a .22 with the profile of a 9mm.

I have had the Walther P22 (not the same as the PPQ M2) and it was OK. It jammed a lot on anything but Minimags. It is gone. I currently have both an M&P 22c and a full-size version. Both are great shooters and have been stellar as far as reliability goes. I actually prefer the full-size but can't put my finger on "why".

I think the advantage of the PPQ over most other .22's out these days (Sig 322, Ruger SR22, M&P Compact) is that it doesn't have a manual safety. The others seem to be SAO pistols that would be carried in condition 1, where the PPQ looks like the typical striker-fired, trigger-blade-safety-only carry pistol.

Am I right about that, or am I missing something?

The PPQ 22 is also hammer fired. I don't have a problem with the safety on a 22 LR and am used to them anyway with my Ruger Standard and Browning Buckmark. The P322 is the only poly frame combat style 22 LR I am interereted in and hope to handle one soon. Good to have options for everyone's preference though.

Thanks for that info, I didn't realize that. Interesting that Sig, Ruger and S&W consider a thumb safety necessary on an SAO hammer-fired gun, but Walther doesn't?

I prefer Condition 1 carry myself, but using a 'plastic' gun as a trainer for plastic guns, but changing the carry condition, seems somewhat less valuable to me.

I am guessing Walther wanted to make the PPQ 22 as much like their centerfire PPQ as possible like Glock did with the Glock 44. The SIG/S&W/Ruger are not a copy of any of their centerfire pistols.

I've had the M&P Compact 22 for six months now...around 600 rounds of a variety of .22 brands...Groups run to ~1-1/2" @ 10 yds from a Weaver Stance. It's very reliable, feeds about anything with the exception of Stingers. I have a life time supply of Federal Auto-Match that's working out great in it, but CCI Mini-Mags hold the accuracy title by a smidge. My only complaint is the trigger is still lousy. A couple glitches as you take up the slack then a reasonable let off. All in all it's a fun .22 plinker and its extremely light weight makes it a joy to tote on the belt. Best Regards, Rod
