I want a compact for CCW. I currently own a revolver for home defense but it's too heavy and bulky for CCW. I have small hands, glocks seem a little to bulky for comfortable trigger control. I've shot my buddy's standard XD9 and really liked the grip and trigger. I've held both the M&P compact and XD9 compact, like both but prefer the grip extension and interchangeable backstraps on M&P. I assume I could purchase a Pearse extension for the XD also? I don't like my pinky dangling or wrapping underneath the grip. I don't have experience shooting either so I can't comment on trigger. I've read some comments that may suggest M&P is still working out bugs with feeding and extraction. Need reliability as this would be primary CCW.

I don't know about the compact version, but the full version M&P is what I own, and I am more than happy with it.

I was in the same situation as you. I really think my XD45 is the best 45 going right now, but the subcompact xds, well, aren't, compared to other offerings. I ended up buying an M&P compact in 9mm and haven't regretted it a bit. It has been 100% reliable, looks good, and seems about as trim as a 12 round 9mm gets.

I know when I was looking for 45s I held the XD and I was like 'this holds 13 rounds, and it feels this good in my hands? I must have'...

It was a very similar process with the M&P. Though even the glock subcompacts seem less brickish than the XDs.

Davidson's lists both guns as DAO, is that true? After racking the slide to load first round, is first pull DA for both? I like the fact that XD requires no takedown tool. XD wider than M&P? Couldn't find width specs on either manufacturer site. XD is a little shorter, weight about the same. Anyone know if there is a magazine extension for the XD that is similar to the M&P?

My friend has the XD9 SC, and the they do come with an extended Mag that holds 16 rounds.

What is the capacity of the M&P extended Mag, and what is this about a takedown tool?

M&P9c---mag cap is 12 rounds. Full size M&P9 is 17 rounds.

The takedown tool holds the interchangable backstraps in place-----the point of any old standard pen will work for takedown----if you don't want to do it properly---just pull the trigger and the slide will come off with no tools.

The M&P is nicer than any eastern bloc offering.

well, check my sig for numerous discussions about this very thing. Go to compact talk I believe there is one up top going right now. If you don't feel like doing that, I'll go ahead and give my take on it.
2 more rounds
grip doesn't feel like a 2x4 with a dent for your thumb
made in america, not croatia
no special extended mags, just get full size mags and slam em in then shoot till it hurts (which will take a few thousand rounds in a session)
Mine has 900 rounds (8 different kinds of ammo) in a month with one malfunction on round #5 (I didn't field strip it before I shot it) just a little lube on the barrel, chamber and rear rails. Zero malfunctions since then.
you don't have to have any tools to field strip, the manual say use the tool but you don't have to.
it doesn't look like someone projectile crapped a glock (personal opinion)
lower bore axis (much lower) changes grip angle a little but recoil is milder because of it.
you can smooth out the trigger to IMO way better than the XD in an hour at your dining room table (did mine this weekend)
i think the trigger is better from the factory anyway
you can get parts for it and fix it your self (or have your smith fix it) instead of sending it in
made in america, not croatia
the measurements on the net may say that the xd is smaller but when you put them side by side the M&P feels smaller than either the XDsc or baby glocks. The xd has all of those 90 degree angles and smith went out of their way to make every edge of the M&P comfortable. One handed reholstering is easier, it more ambidextrious supposedly (I'm right handed)
2 more rounds, and last but most importantly, it's a smith & wesson
get what you want but the M&P felt so much better in my hand. I went back and grabbed a XD the other day and it felt horrible
did I mention that it's made in America?
here's a thread that is similar http://mp-pistol.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=3098

I am sure that the XDSC is a nice little gun. It is fairly popular. I would not mean to slam it at all, but to me, it just does not feel right. It feels very top heavy and just awkward. I have never shot one. It may be a nice little shooter. That said, I REALLY do like my M&P .40c very much!! It feels great, shoots great and IMHO look great.
