Mainly for range fun, target, possibly competition in the future? All seem like great pistols. None are on the California Handgun Roster but can be bought here from an exempt person for a VERY high price.

I've always wanted to own an H&K firearm. I've never owned one but have shot plenty of them and they generally make really excellent guns.

The Walther seems pretty nice too and it has a normal mag release whereas with the VP9, you have to hunt down a VP9B to get the same button release, rare here in California. I'm not totally against the paddle release either. I have heard that the PPQ M2 shoots well and that the stock trigger is better than the VP9

The Canik is getting rave reviews from owners, I have never shot one but the reputation is very good. I have owned other Turk made firearms and generally, I find the Turks make very good guns.

If it will be for fun, target shooting and possibly competition, I'd go with the models with the longer barrel/sight radius.
So HK VP9L and Walther PPQ M2 5''. The Canik TP9 SFX is already the 5'' model.
If the german longer model pistols are not available and you don't like the VP9 paddle magazine release, I'd go with the Canik also because is very very similar to the PPQ, mechanically speaking.

The Caniks are truly the best bargains, they'll do everything the PDP and VP9 do. If you were to get a VP9, you can buy the long slide/barrel separately and have two different options for competition/defense.

Everybody deserves a piece of heaven in their life. Get the HK, you will never regret it.
And try some target shooting. The HK will really shine thru.

I've got all those guns, thousands of rounds through each. The Canik is overall the best, mostly because of the trigger. PPQs are snappier than both the others. I bought the VP9, VP9L and the PPQ before I bought 4 Caniks if that tells you anything. Get the Canik Rival, its the best gun I own period. My instructor has 40+ pistols including the ones you are asking about. Guess what his favorite gun is? Rival all day. Nothing that's not double the price or more comes close. It's a real thing. I forgot to mention that the Rival is an SFX model, as is the Mete. Each model got about 10% better until the latest model the Rival (I have them all). They improved a bit with each. The flat trigger on the Rival SFX knocked it out of the
park. Another thing about the Rival is that the blowback comes straighter back somehow, so the recoil is closer to a .380 than 9mm, and less muzzle flip. Not sure how they did it. I have about 15 k rounds through just my Caniks, with about 10 failures to feed, all when they were brand new. If you get one, lock it open for a week or 2 to prevent that.

If you're a mag hoarder, look up Canik mag availability. After you do that, decide between the HK and the Walther.

As someone who loves the VP9 (I have 2) and just bought a Canik yesterday, I am already regretting the Canik purchase due to mag availability. Haven't even shot it yet.

I went with the HK because of the ergos. The Walther was not bad at all, and I may even still get one for giggles. The Canik I got was similar to the old Walthers with a decocker button on the slide. That was the reason I bought it. Well and it was only $350.

I believe Walther is one of the most under rated brands in the US due to lack of marketing. Except for their umarex offerings in 22 and 380, which are essentially junk.

I believe any will serve you well. The HK is what did it for me.

I found out today that the mags are starting to trickle in again. Black hawk armory has hd them, as well as a few others.

I’ve owned many different brands over the years and to me the Walther was nicer to shoot than the HK. HK never grew on me although I like their striker trigger better than DA. Definitely did not like the P30. Never had a Canik but based on reviews and popularity I’d get it with optic cut over the other 2 but I don’t live in California so can get one at great price. FWIW I’m all Glock now so you may or may not care about my opinion :)

I have the HK VP9 and the PPQ and they they both are oustanding and huge fun at the range. I have a slight preference for the VP9 because I like the grip a little better and the PPQ is a bit more snappy shooting but still very mangeable. Never ever a problem with either and both extremely accurate. However for self defense use I prefer the VP9 as for me I don't like the lighter trigger on the PPQ for self defense purposes.

Keep in mind that poly frame Walther PPQ has been discontinued and replaced by the Walther PDP which has optic mounting capability standard. Below is a video on the PDP if you are not too familiar with it yet. The Walther PDP also topped Honest Outlaw's list for Top 5 best full size poly frame pistols.

I was not aware of that. I thought both lines were in production.

Walther's website still shows the PPQ https://waltherarms.com/defense-featured/ppq-m2-8/

They may be making some PPQs like the PPQ 45 and maybe the optics ready Q5 Match but as far as 9MM if it is not optic ready you probably won't see any more poly frame PPQ 9MM pistol new for sale anymore unless they are new stock still in the system. At least that is what Walther has stated according to sources on Wallther forum.

The Walther P99 AS was on Walther's website quite a while too after it had no longer been available. Not sure if Walther has officially discontinued it or not. A German Walther Forum member recently posted that Walther had made a small batch for the German market and he had seen one in his local gun store. Out this way I have not seen any new poly frame PPQ pistols at local gun stores for months now. Walther is still making the steel frame PPQ, at least for now.

I'm not a volume shooter but my VP9 tactical has been flawless and serves HD duty. Nice shooter.

In California, the few Canik TP9SFX I have seen for sale were outrageously priced, even for California, $1,750 and there is even a Whiteout Model for sale on the Calguns Marketplace right now at $2,500.

We have the same issues in California that you have in America with Machine Guns. I've seen law enforcement catalog pricing for MGs and if America didn't have artificial government factors known as the '68 GCA and '86 FOPA and 'transferable' MGs, America would have affordable, free market MGs. Law enforcement pays about $3k to $3,500 for an H&K MP5 versus $50k for a transferable one for mere mortals. Handguns here in California are the same way, there are only one or two avenues to legally get an off roster handgun into California and there aren't that many non exempt people. So when comes up for sale, the demand is leagues higher than the supply for a non roster handgun, hence the insanity pricing model here.

FWIW, I read an article comparing and contrasting the Walther to the HK VP and the conclusions reached were that the Walther build quality was better .. forged block slide vs spot-welds on the HK VP slide.
Defense Review, maybe? Maybe do some Google-fu sleuthing. Again, take this with a grain of FWIW.

I have no first hand experiences with any of the models (PPQ, PDP, VP9, Canik)

Luckily for me, I don't need any of them. My full-sized, plastic, striker fired pistol is the Glock G17 G3, which is okay but the trigger is meh and the grip, to me is like holding a 2x4, but I shoot it adequately. I'm not excited about tricking out the G17, even with a better trigger, etc., it'll still be ugly and will still have a grip like a 2x4.

I used to own the CZ 75 SP-01, which I stupidly sold to finance another pistol, that I still have and like (Smith & Wesson 625-8), but I am also considering buying the 75 SP-01 again as it's on the California Handgun Roster and therefore,
I can get one off of Gunbroker or at a local dealer for around $800. I know it's metal, heavier and not striker fired, but other than those factors, how would you who own the VP9 or the Walthers/Caniks compare shooting the 75 SP-01
versus these pistols? I also know it's not too difficult to customize the 75 SP-01 with Cajun parts too to make the trigger better, etc. I am a big CZ fan in general, I own several of their guns and used to own a 527 Rifle. CZ is impressive.

I'm a Walther fan so the Walter PDP is what I would be looking at. I have a Walther PPQ but it's a Q5 SF Pro. It's phenomenal but it's not part of what the Op is asking about. The PDP is and the OP should check it out. Walther's quality is excellent, but so it HK's. I looked at the Canik Tp, the HK VP9, and the Sig P210, when I bought the Walther. I was hoping I wouldn't regret picking the Walther and I don't regret it at all.

As far as I'm concerned though, I don't think you would make a mistake buying any of the three, and I feel your pain trying to make your choice.
That was what I went through.
My experience with Walther so far has been extremely good.
Good luck and I hope what ever you pick makes you very happy. I don't think you can loose on this decision, on what ever you pick.

The OP's thread topic...

Your Opinion - H&K VP9 vs. Walther PPQ M2 vs. Canik TP9SFX?

I only wrote the PPQ M2 because they are somewhat more available in California than the PDP. To give you an idea of the price difference we would have to pay in California, there is a great condition PPQ M2 available now with just a few hundred rounds through it for $1,100. There is also a NIB PDP FS for $1,800. I know the PDP is newer and better but $700 better? Likely not.

I prefer the PPQ off that list and am sorry to see it replaced with the PDP.
(If you want a "trainer" the PPQ .22 is good, although all such .22s are being eclipsed by the P322 for its capacity.)

Another VP9 fan here. I love everything about this gun from the customizing, ergonomic design of it's grip assembly to the smooth clean triger with it's short reset. The sights are great too and I'm starting to get use to the paddle mag release (though it's still going to take me some time after many moons of shooting 1911s)!

The CZ SP01 is a terrific pistol. I have the basic CZ SP01 Shadow that I paid about $850 for about 6 years ago. I highly recommend it for a range/target pistol and it is much softer shooter than my VP9/PPQ due to weighing a lot more due to the steel frame and at least as accurate in my hands. If you get the plain Jane SP01 you may want to upgrade the trigger depending on how you like the trigger on the SP01 you get. Plently of parts from Cajun Gun Works and CZ Custom to do so. I got and installed from Cajun Gun Works their high quality copy of the "original" CZ85 Combat style trigger and that made it perfect for me.

The Canik is the best bang for the buck. Extremely reliable and the trigger is better than the other two listed. The only problem is the lack of availability of magazines. 3 years ago the magazines were all over the place. now they are nowhere to be found.

I doubt also that there is very much difference between the PDP and the M2 either.

I looked at a CZ also when I bought my Q5 and it was also something I considered also, but I was looking for a particular interest and that swayed my decision.

Talk about gouging! It's a $700.00 gun.
