Rockchucker Supreme Kit or Lyman Brass Smith Kit?

Lyman or rockchucker? So we answered, mostly rockchucker.

Ok, so you went with a Lee.

Why, exactly, do we take time to answer this?
Guess I consider the Lee more of a gadget than anything. It wasn't really in the scope of my original question, the Lee is kind of a one trick pony and I have other cartridges to load for so my question still stands but I am leaning toward the the Rockchucker. Or maybe the rebel. Not sure, gotta kick it around a lil more.
Not sure how much I should care about the lack of on board priming on the rebel.

Not sure why you got your gruff up, I still need an actual reloading press but if you feel it's not worth your time and effort, by all means.

What he bought was a lee loader which is not a press at all but a cheap way to see if reloading is his cup-o-tea. It's a great way to find out and does not mean a press is still not in the cards.

It'll do one of two things.....sour him on reloading and he'll move on to another hobby, or whet his appetite for something that's more fun. That's the way I started 50 years ago, only then I bought a $20 Lee Target Loader (no longer offered). In those days the regular Lee Loader was $12.95 I think. :) I loaded exactly 20 rounds of .243 Winchester, and the resulting ammo put 5 rounds in the same hole at 100 yards. (my brother was watching with binoculars and after the first shot kept telling me I missed....but when we went to the target, discovered one big ragged hole) My reaction was, "reloading is cool, but there's got to be a better way". So I discovered a Rockchucker kit at Gander Mountain and never used the Lee Target Loader again. Still have it.....

Awesome accuracy.....Pain in the Butt to use, when I was young and impatient. ;)

Yeah pretty much. It looked like a cool gadget, certainly not without its limitations but for $40 I'm willing to play with it a lil. I'm not considering the Lyman at this point, too many here and forums elsewhere seem to heavily favor the RCBS for single stage.

Just gotta watch a few more videos of the Rockchucker and Rebel but I think it's between those two.....

Is one of these kits the way to go or should I do it piecemeal and buy different stuff over time? I'm not opposed to just picking up a press and getting the rest in dribs and drabs. Just want to know if I should one and done it and if the RCBS is quantifiably better product than the Lyman.

While I have no experience with the Lyman and own a RCBS, I think I am safe saying either will do you well. Kits work fine for folks with no equipment and just a vague idea of what's needed to get started. Most of the time you will need more stuff, but for the most part, if you can find components, you will be able to load ammo with what you get. The most important thing that comes with most kits is a reloading manual. Not only will it tell you what components to buy and tested recipes you can trust, it also gives proper progression and technique for safe and reliable ammo. Read it. More than once.

Notice in the picture that that old Target Loader even came with a Lee hand primer. Not long after my R.C. purchase some guy blew up his on-press primer tube somewhere and "National Rifleman" magazine reported it in the next magazine issue. That skeered me so I started hand priming (even bought another Lee primer to be able to prime both sizes without changing. I didn't prime "on press" for years.....one of the reasons I was attracted to RCBS's APS system on my first progressive.

They since have made it a little safer by surrounding primer tubes with an "explosion" sleeve, but I'm still allergic to the noise. :) That's why when I bought a "bench primer" it was also APS. (but they quit that product this year...APS didn't convince enough reloaders to try it.) So its either prime one at a time, use a tray primer from Lee, or use the tubes. I wouldn't worry about it, except that don't be carrying about tubes of primers across a room with nylon carpet full of static, like one guy on this forum did. (and keep the tubes clean)

One last piece of advice: While reloading never force anything.....if it isn't smooth as butter or close....stop and check out what's wrong....or you will mangle a primer or worse. Only exception is, it does take a little pressure to size a large rifle case...even with proper lubrication. If you forget to lube you get a stuck case and that isn't fun.....so again too much pressure? Stop.

I will have to Disagree, Lee Loaders are a Lifestyle! In the Woods with 2 boys cranking out 45-70’s then shooting a buffalo from a moving train with a Sharps Rifle! Yes, I day dream alot.

That’s PRETTY!

The rebel replaced the chucker I believe and is more heavy duty according to jrb... I use an old jl3 that my friend found in the trash. Spending big money is not required if you find a good o style press the dies are going to be a bigger deal. There is a huge difference in how nice they are and how easy to use. If your planning on using varmint loads with 40 grain bullets in that 223 a window die will prevent hundreds of pinched fingers.

Rock chucker hands down!
Super customer service!

I emailed RCBS about missing parts for my 90200 Hand Primer, that was bought used, and the parts are on the way at no cost. I emailed, initially, questioning how in the heck I order parts. I had the part numbers but no on-line way to order.

Granted, we aren't talking a lot of money here but the whole process was quick and seamless. I can't say that about Lyman. I like most of their products but every last screw will cost you.

I am not green with envy. :)

I would buy the RCBS product. In my mind either of the two kits would work. But the Customer service departments of the two companies are at the two extreme ends of the spectrum.

RCBS is stunningly great and Lyman customer service is non-existent. I have never gotten a return call from Lyman customer service for such items as a missing screw or a nonfunctioning tumbler.

the Kit is were the value is! you get all the good stuff plus at a discount price and good CS!

and get a Pro trim! EMP bomb proof!

Customer service is a key component in my view. Between two proven products, I will always favor the company that provides good service. Poor customer service is a huge pet peeve of mine. Personal service in this country has gone in the toilet so the good ones stand out.

I think I will go with an RCBS product, just not sure which one yet....

I’m still waiting on something RCBS to break. Still Waiting, one day, one year now

If I had to choose today, I would go with the Rebel. It's a tank but so is my RII and RIV. But a bigger tank.

They are all pretty good equipment. I would order another RCBS SS press in a heartbeat based on their CS. A progressive/ turret I would have to do what you're doing now.

Mark- I opted to buy my equipment piece by piece. If I had bought a kit, I realized that half of the purchased items I did not want and the rest I would replace with better equipment.

Now I have what I want.

I'm such a minimalist the kits just don't have any real value for me. I just need a basic press, dies, dial caliper and a simple beam scale to reload about anything I'd care to shoot. I really don't' want or need a "Chargemaster" or RCBS dial calipers...

alright, I bought a Kit 6 years ago, and never used the greasing pad. I just did with cooking spray and it works great! I like things on sale and use them for display until I need them. And if I don’t… At lease I got it at a good price

You and my wife apply the same logic. She'll save $50 by spending $400 on a pair of shoes she'll never wear because they're too fancy to mess up - but at least she got them on sale! Wadda bargain! o_O

I have never lost money on reloading equipment! Yes, I like to surround myself with Lee Dies and and Lee Loaders, but it what makes me smiles and get my noodles thinking after a long day! crack open a cold one! and relax with Lee by my side!
