What can I do about this? I do not go into the city
That only works until it doesn’t.
Let me explain. I live in a small town, a real small town, we have no police because we have no mayor, no city council, we are not incorporated. I’ve been told the population for the entire zip code is around 2,300, the town itself would be a few hundred. We don’t know for sure because the last census that listed us as a town was in 1870.
About a month ago the service station nearest to me had a cop get knocked out and pistol whipped by a guy that snuck up behind him because he knew he had a warrant out for him.
I hear about a murder every 2-3 months, normally drug related. This week a friend called me tell me to keep a look out for a 10x6 trailer with feed spreader on in that had been stolen out his yard. It’s really getting bad around here, and we definitely ain’t a city.
The last time our sheriff ran EVERY deputy endorsed his opponent, he won anyway. Why? He’s told the deputies not to arrest people unless they have to and when the main gig in town is illegal drug activity that’s the kind of guy they want. I work with guy who’s son went to the ATM at said gas station, then got followed out and a guy hoped in his passenger seat and pulled a gun on him then told him to drive him to someone’s house. The kid drove into a parked vehicle so he’d have time to jump out and run off.
eventually the deputy showed up and upon a description of the guy knew who he was, confirmed with a mug shot. A couple weeks later they called and asked for an update. They actually told him they hadn’t been looking for the guy. Of course how would you with only 2 deputies, on good days.
So what do I do? I can drive 17 miles to a different gas station but sooner or later their want be anywhere else to go. We better be arming up and learning how to use defend ourselves. And I know people that are scared to do that because they fear getting killed by the family/friends of the attacker. That’s not a unrealistic fear, in a town this small, with virtually no law enforcement and a large criminal population, it has happened before.
I guess I’m just saying we can’t avoid everywhere, and it seems that’s where we are headed as a society.
