Want a 25.06 considering weatherby vanguard?

I've had a few 25-06 but my current one is a Weatherby Fibermark. It has the 6 lug action and handles and shoots very well. I've killed a couple antelope with it using 117gr Sierra's. It would be one of the last rifles in the safe that I would sell.

Mine is a mid-80's 700 BDL, and for a long time was the most accurate rifle that I owned.

I don't think that I've ever heard of a bad shooting 25-06, although I'm sure some exist. If so, it's not the fault of the cartridge.

Howa makes the Vanguard. Over the years Weatherby has asked them to be built with slightly different specs than Howa, but they are built in the same place and all parts are interchangeable. Depending on when it was made you may get a 2 position safety on one and a 3 position safety on the other. Some used fluted bolts, some not. Stocks may be a different design but are interchangeable. And barrel length and contour may be different. But they are essentially the same rifle.

Between those pick the one with the features you like and at the best price. At various times I've seen Weatherby cost more, at other times Howa.

But I've owned just about everything out there. Right now, I'd buy Tikka. Nothing else comes close at anywhere near the price. If they don't make a Tikka in 25-06 I'd still buy a Tikka in another cartridge. There is nothing magic about any particular cartridge. They are all more similar than different.

I have a Vanguard in 25-06, and it is reasonably accurate with American Whitetail 117 gr. However, the Weatherby stock doesn't fit me particularly well (Tikkas are a much better fit for me) and I find it a bit heavy and cumbersome. I consider it a bench gun, not a hunting gun.

If I was going Weatherby it would be a 257 Weatherby and not 25-06….

I just attached a 25-06 barrel to a pre-Accutrigger Savage I had laying around. Of course, I am biased towards Savage and Weatherby actually because they make many LH rifles. Unfortunately, not in the Howa/Vanguard line.

This Savage has a nice creep and overtravel free 3 lb trigger. Those older Savage triggers were really nice but that is neither here nor there.

More to your question. My favorite bolt rifle right now is the Ruger American which alas doesn’t feature 25-06 as a chamber however my other favorite is a Browning A/X Bolt of which there are a few around in 25-06. Not easy to find unfortunately.

If you want one today, here is a good deal.

TC Venture here in 25-06 tackdriver. Also with Weatherby rifles you have "freebore"it can reduce accuracy. Reloading you will be fine to adjust for it.

Everyone can go ahead and laugh, but…I really, really like my Savage Axis II in .25-06. Excellent accuracy with ever 100 gr factory ammo I’ve tried. Didn’t like the 117 and 120 gr ammo, but that was early with few rounds down the tube. Maybe it will better handle heavies now, but why mess with something that works?

I bought the Axis II specifically because it is small and relatively light making it manageable for young hunters. If I were to buy another .25-06 it would absolutely have a 24” barrel rather than the 22” on the Axis. The .25-06 is very “overbore” (the case capacity divided by bore area is well over 1,000; actually over 1,200 if I remember correctly), so it benefits from a longer barrel. No need to go too long though since it is difficult to get high BC 0.257” bullets that would make good use of a barrel longer than 24”.

Also would consider other makes of bolt guns.
I RELOAD FOR a friends custom 1903 springfieild with medium barrel 25.06. The thing is an absolute tack driver!

WHAT MAKE RIFLE IN 25.06 DO YOU LIKE?
What say you?
BULL
I have a custom put together rifle on a Remington 700 complete action with a timney trigger, custom sanded down and inlet Remington walnut stock, and a Light Palma 1:7.5 twist 25-06 5/8x24 threaded 26in McGowen barrel.

It actually isn’t my rifle, but a friend has a 1980’s vintage Interarms MkX “Viscount” (budget version with plain walnut stock) that is a tack driver that has accounted for numerous deer.
I’ve seen it on more than a few preseason sight in days shoot three touching with Sierra 120gr BtHpt GameKings over 43.0gr of IMR4320.

I’ve got a .30/06 and .270 in MkX . Both are tack drivers. So, if I were to run across another in 7mag or .25/06 for a decent price I’d jump on it.

I recently saw a decent MkX Whitworth .375H&H at a price well above my “buy it!” Price. Always wanted one.

Another friend had a Cooper Arms circa 1997 that shot 3-4” at 100yds. It made three trips back to Montana to correct it. Dan kept sending it back with 1” groups on printed targets. I showed the owner the “fine print”. 40yds!

Finally, he took it to David Sams when he was still in Phoenix City, Al.
David:
1. Removed the barrel, and,
2. Trued the receiver
3. Squared the bolt face
4. Set barrel back one thread
5. Recut the chamber and throat,
6. Recut the muzzle and crown

With a Sierra 110gr MatchKing over either 51.5gr of IMR4350 or 54.0gr H4831 would shoot 5-shot 1/2” groups.

Even Ruger M77’s and #1’s I’ve shot in .25/06 shot well!

I do have a Vanguard!
Buts it’s a .257Wby.
It’s sub MOA with many loads. But Heavy! My only regret is that it only has a 24” bbl.
It loses about 100fps to a 26”bbl.

I hear nothing but good about the Weatherby Vanguard rifles. I have a MarkV and it would be the last rifle I would sell.
I wish Howa would build a Left Handed Vanguard and I would buy one.

As far as 25-06 I have owned 2 a Ruger #1 and a Ruger M77. Both shot great and worked as expected on whitetails. If I was going with a Weatherby I would most likely go 257 Weatherby Mag. As a reloader, ammo cost would be only slightly more....

I've owned a Remington 700 VS in .25-06 since 1982. I wouldn't trade that rifle for anything. I have shot countless groundhogs in Ohio, it went bear hunting in Canada and deer hunting in FL.

If I were buying now it would probably be a Kimber or Winchester.

My default answer is always Browning. I’ve had multiple Browning firearms. Never disappointed. Accuracy. Fit. Finish. AFAIK American made, at least rifles. I know some models were made overseas

I tried to see if they make the X Bolt or anything else in .25-06 but couldn’t get the page to work correctly

Give this link a try...
They list an x bolt white medallion at $1600 MSRP if you want fancy, Lincoln driving, taste in rifles. They also like normal x bolts at 1000 as well.

At the range I shoot at, as far as hunting rifles go, I see more Savage Axis than anything else.

Tonight I saw an Axis with laminated stock, adjustable comb , and adjustable stock that I really liked. I know the Axis comes in 25-06. This one would have come home with me if it was 25-06 or 270, but it was in 22-250 and I don't need one of those. Tempted to go ahead and buy it, then go to Academy and buy the synthetic 270 they have and swap stocks.:what:

Model 70 sporter in “quarter -06”. My grandfather has had it a long time; I’ve killed a bunch of deer with it. a lot of family members (“have”)as well. I shall be adding one to the stable soon…
