Want a 25.06 considering weatherby vanguard?

I have a Weatherby (Howa) Vanguard chambered in .257 Weatherby Magnum and it is a real tack driver. Can't beat Howa rifles for value, imo.

A Vanguard in 25-06 would be an excellent choice for that chambering. It will have a 24" barrel which is very fitting for a 25-06 hunting rifle. Those come with a very stable stock that makes for a good hunting rifle. Every bit the counterpart to the Rem 700 25-06.
The actions are very smooth, strong, and the barrels are very accurate with a nice contour.

My default answer is always Browning. I’ve had multiple Browning firearms. Never disappointed. Accuracy. Fit. Finish. AFAIK American made, at least rifles. I know some models were made overseas

I tried to see if they make the X Bolt or anything else in .25-06 but couldn’t get the page to work correctly

Dunno. I was under the impression they were American made, maybe not. I should look on my X Bolt but the it might be different now. I have a Browning BPCR .45-90 from maybe 25 years ago that was made in Japan. Some of the 60-70’s and earlier were made in Belgium

Pretty sure mshootnit is right. However, Jap-made generally speaking means well-made when it comes to almost anything and it certainly does when it comes to firearms.

Amen if my Ithaca SKB Model 500 O/U is any indication. Great field shotgun that works as well as it did when I bought it in 1974.

I've never had a Vanguard but I do own 6 Howa model 1500's. Guess you could say I think highly of them and a Vanguard is basicly a Howa 1500 just trimmed out a little different.

Another fan of Tikka. My 25-06 is a tack driver and better than most of my other rifles. I agree, though, that the cartridge helps many shooters shoot their best. Another plus on the Tikka…pretty reasonable price compared to most others. If I was on a tight budget I’d look hard at the Savage…also great shooters. Good luck!

Tikkas are fine for average or larger shooters due to the length of pull and somewhat flat trigger. I find myself wanting to replace the plastic bottom, and the rubber pad. Other than that they are nice, but only offer a 22.4" barrel for this chambering, and a 25-06 can make use of longer legs.

Agree. The main thing I wish were different on my .25-06 Savage Axis is a 24" barrel instead of 22". Sure it's an entry level gun, but it's half the price or less and very accurate. I seriously considered buying an Axis II in .280ai but decided to spring for another $450 for the Kimber, mostly to get the 24" barrel.

I had a Vanguard 257Wby for years until it was stolen. I went back to my No.1V in 25-06 and I’m quite happy. The Quarter bore is too often overlooked as an effective killer. It’s a capable cartridge for most anything in the lower 48 if the nut behind the wheel does his part.

Speaking of using a quarter bore on anything in the lower 48, I see that Barnes publishes load data for a 90 gr banded solid. I don’t see it for sale on their website so probably discontinued, but I’m curious what someone would use a 90 gr, 0.257 solid for?

Those were bronze turned bullets and highly armor piercing at 3300 FPS in a .25-06 and above 3500 in a .257 Weatherby. I think during Obama era it was suggested by the ATF that they be discountinued. You only see that kind of projo today in the slower and more blunt "dangerous game" calibers where they have "legitimate sporting purposes" . Here is Barnes statement about the pointy small caliber ones they used to make: "Some shooters use Solids on coyotes or foxes to save pelts. Also, the spitzer design has a higher B.C. for target and competition shooters."
The existing stocks of various bronze turned smaller caliber bullets were sold off rather cheaply They still may have .50 M2 ones for sale, because ya know , target shooting.

If I was going Weatherby it would be a 257 Weatherby and not 25-06….

I just attached a 25-06 barrel to a pre-Accutrigger Savage I had laying around. Of course, I am biased towards Savage and Weatherby actually because they make many LH rifles. Unfortunately, not in the Howa/Vanguard line.

This Savage has a nice creep and overtravel free 3 lb trigger. Those older Savage triggers were really nice but that is neither here nor there.

More to your question. My favorite bolt rifle right now is the Ruger American which alas doesn’t feature 25-06 as a chamber however my other favorite is a Browning A/X Bolt of which there are a few around in 25-06. Not easy to find unfortunately.

Have you priced Weatherby Ammo? the .257 Weatherby is a helluva round if you can afford it the .25-06 makes more sense.
