I was driving to work this morning. I realized that I needed some gas, so I pulled into the gas station that I normally frequent that happens to be across the street from where I work. It was a Valero gas station and I pulled into the last pump. Sharing the pump on the other side of me was a red car with 4 black guys in it. I noticed that there was another black guy standing in front of their car and words were being exchanged. I step out of my car and I walk around the back of my car to the passenger side. While doing that, I can hear the altercation occurring. I could tell that the lone black guy out front was defending himself for some sort of offense that had just occurred. So, while I am making my way around the back of my car, a passenger in the front has his door open. He is getting ready to get out. Brandishes a handgun. Racks the slide to chamber a round. I am like within 10 feet of this. I quickly get to the other side of my car. The pump is now between me and the gunman. I hear words being said, but at this point, I have blocked it all out. I quickly shut the gas lid on my car and walked briskly back around my car to get in and leave the area. I did not make eye contact with anyone. I got in my car and sped off. I will get gas near my house in a "safer" part of town.

I am have my CCL, but I was not carrying... nor would I have even tried to intervene. It was better to just leave the area quickly. I think that was the case for another customer that was there as well.

I only wish that I did have my gun just in case shots were fired. If I could not have gotten away safely, then I would to have liked to have been able to defend myself as best as I could. I think that my gun carrying habits are going to change from this moment forward.

I have often thought about what would happen if I were ever in such a situation. I am glad that I was first able to just leave the situation. I was not prepared and it was better to leave and to do so safely.

My heart rate was racing pretty good for about an hour after that moment. I was talking with some co-workers about my experience and was told to not get gas in this area. Too many gun related incidents have occurred in that area. There is a lot of crime in that area.

At any rate, I am glad to be safe and home.

Well, You would have left gun or not. You did good.

However, was a cell phone availible by chance? Was there a way to notify leo's of the potential situation going down?

You meet the first rule taught in our CCW class.

Avoidiance.

That is good yah?

Im thinking a WAG that you were in either Dallas or over in Houston for stuff like this to happen.

close call...

Thank God you're ok! Hopefully no one was hurt in that altercation. Are you going to carry more often?

didnt call the police or anything?

I dont have any issue with you leaving or avoiding the confrontation, probably wise on your part, but seems like something that should ,at the very least, be reported to the authorities. It is just a good thing to do... That way, had shots been fired, the police would have at least been in route or even arrived to stop things before further escalation... you could also have provided description of the gun, car, and those commiting the offense...

Avoidance was first and foremost on my mind.

Carrying at work is just not an option, but carrying in the car to and from work might be an option from this point forward. I normally carry regularly, but it is not an everyday occurrence. My carrying habits are changing from this point forward though.

I did not have my cell phone on me. I was kicking myself for not having it. I usually carry it with me.... but this was one morning that I forgot it at home. I would have called the police had I had it. No chance for me to even get the license plate number... I was too busy speeding out of the lot.

Well, all in all, yer safe.

Id be picking another gas station in a safer place to fill regularly.

In my town I tend to fill on either one of two particular days when the LEO's tend to be stopping by just starting out on thier morning patrols... things are mighty ... peaceful.

It's when the nights fall things get a bit.. strange around the station. My truck has a large enough tank that I sometimes transfer gasoline to the car at home instead of going to that station when the need arises.

I think he wrote that he managed to get to the gas cap on the car but never touched the pump.

And I dont think anyone will stand there pumping gas like a good sheep after seeing what he saw.

don't miss understand I would have been out of there, call and told them what was going on and make arrangement to settle up.

My thought was avoiding a really bad situation and get home to get busted for stealing gas....that would suck.

I might suggest you should have not gotten back in your car at all and put some distance between the altercation and yourself until things wound down or the cops came.

Mhmm. That would be bad.

Gads, this can of worms. Here is you getting out of dodge, possibly being processed as a run off gas theft while a gun battle erupts over here and possible a fire or collateral casulties over there with more people running into the store seeking what little shelter there is behind the cooler shelves.

Naw, I read it carefully and felt that he never touched the gas handle. So... that is why I chose to word my response that way.

It serves as a great discussion for me because if I was carrying in HIS shoes and saw a gun being racked next car over... all I can think of is avoidiance.

Makes me consider sinking a 500 gallon farm tank and whistling up mr gas deliveryman once a month or something.

I say good move on getting the blazes out of there. Who really cares if you paid for the gas. You can reimburse the gas station owner later when no one is waving guns around. Calling 911 and telling the cops would have been a good move, but hey. The hood has its own rules and sometimes the cops wouldn't show up anyway, depending on where it occurred. Even if you had been totin', It still would have been smarter to ditch anyway. Theres a difference between defending your life and willfully getting involved in a gunfight. You did OK.

Some of you folks will be surprised to hear that some gas stations have these new fangdangled gas pumps where you stick in your credit card and the amount of the sale is charged to the card. REALLY!! You don't have to go up to the little window and pay with money!!!!! Ain't it just flat out amaze'n?!!

Buck Snort we had that amazing experience one time.

It promptly locked up 75 dollars of our bank money for the 20 dollar purchase for a few days.

Here in the south things are slow. We pay in cash these days. No need for all that rushing about with cards.

I was thinking of other tv shows that played gas station situations that included gunplay that was quite amazing.

I stop, eye the stranger, pick-up a twig to chew on.....Ya all aint from around here now are ya.

Are you asking a question, or just sharing a story? Based on the story, sounds like you did right. Enough said.

I live in Denver, Colorado. This is why I pump gas for my wife everytime she needs it. If she needs gas, she just lets me know, and I get it for her.

Good job getting out of there. I carry 24/7 and I would have been grabbing for my gun while heading out. With no shots fired, leaving would be easy. If lead would have hit the air, it would have been very hard to do anything but, to prepare to engage.

For the record I'm white, but this is an unnecessary designation.

He used a descriptive term what's the big deal? It's ok to mention that someone is black

As to the situation, you did fine. I wouldn't have wasted time with the cops, gas stations have video cams these days

It's unfortunate that it took something like this to make you realize you need to carry a gun and a phone, but if this convinces you, all the better. You're still alive.

so what's the point of decribing the individuals as black? Are you afraid of black folks?

+1, keeping out of a situation is always better than firing a shot if possible. the only siuation i would not avoid like the plague is a rape. if i come across one in progress, and i can help, i will. damn the legal torpedo's! oops, i just thought of one more, a child abduction.
