What is your Smith & Wesson dream gun that they never made?

There are a zillion different variations of Smith & Wesson revolvers floating around. I can't count the number of times that I've visited this forum and learned of a gun that was new to me, like the fixed sight .44 Mag snubby posted today.

Any reasonable man would say that there already exists a model that is well-nigh perfect for any purpose. Well, that's where we come in.

If you could get a new Smith & Wesson revolver, in any combination of frame, barrel, caliber, sights, finish, grips, etc., what would it be? We'll just go ahead and assume for our purposes that the lock is left off.

Mine would be a variant of the 696. I would like a 5 shot round butt L Frame .44 Special with fixed sights and a 3 1/2" half lug barrel in a blue finish.

3" 649 with unfluted cylinder. Someone's got a highly polished gunsmith's special of that gun floating around, with pictures cropping up occasionally.

There are a lot of variations that I'd like to see. None of which have the lock.
Of models that I currently have and that come to mind would be a true 4" M500 w/o comp.

I wish they would have attempted to build a Bulldog Pug. (yes I know about the 696, I have one of the first ones produced) There's nothing more suited to everyday carry than a small .44 spl. The guy that designed the Pug really understood CCW revolvers. Of course the quality control left something to be desired but the size and weight of that gun chambered in .44 spl. was a very good idea. I love my 696 and will never part with it but it's not really a small frame and it sure ain't lightweight. It gets carried a lot anyway. And I agree with Jubjub, blued steel would be even better.

'Russian' size 'Break-Top' in .45 ACP, in various Barrel Lengths from 2 to 8-1/2 inches.

Model 1905 'M&P' in 9 mm Luger, .30 Mauser, and .38 ACP or even .38 Super, using full Moon Clips...various Barrel lengths from 2 to 6-1/2 inches.

'Safety Hammerless' Break-Top, five-shot, in 9mm Luger...

A few each of those in my carry-or-collect Stable, and, I'd be happy.

But...these are ones they should have made 80-90 years ago for Pete's sake...

Moonclips are sweetness itself. I've shot a 622 and it was nice. I'm hoping to get a chance to shoot a 610 loaded with .40. I know they made a 9mm option for a very breif time and this is the one I wish they still made in a format that worked with moonclips. I'd be all over one of those if they were more available.

I'm lucky enough to have a club up this way that shoots Speed Steel matches where revolvers can compete on a fair footing. But being able to shuck the empties and pop in a new ring of rounds would make this event even more sweet for revolvers than it already is.

Hi BC Rider,

I found out that the Israelis, in the latter 1940s, made copies of the Model1905 S&W 'M&P' in 9mm, using Moon Clips...

Be fun to find one...

What, you mean this one?

I would agree. I'd buy one of those in a heartbeat. Often times thought of calling S&W and seeing how much it'd be from them to have one made like that. IRC, a 649 with a 3" model 60 barrel. Dunno about the cylinder.

Alternately.....a 5" half-lug 686 would be nice, or 66.

Eightball: That's the one. Unfluted cylinder is a Model 60 item too. They'd have to find a front sight to match the 649's fixed rear.

Does the Performance Center play mix-n-match? It would only be a matter of getting parts from the right bins and putting it together.

It would be nice if their lockwork were more robust, like that of a Ruger, but with a trigger mechanism as close to the normal S&Ws as possible.

Fun question, I'll take a 3" matt blue finish model 13 with lightweight Scandium frame.

that 649 is close to it.

A 640, or a 340 (Scandium frame) with a 3" barrel.

Adjustable sights an option.

Light weight K-frame 10 shot 22LR. Adjustable sights, of course.

The 617 is too darn heavy for a 22 revolver. Give it a no lug barrel, too. About 30 ounces or less total weight.

A five shot 44 Special with fixed sights on the K-Frame. They say they can't do it but some how Charter Arms produced the Bulldog. Oh well, they lost me as a customer with the locks.

Five Inch Barrel.
Like this?

Yup, they made 'em.
