I work at a large electronics retail store. We had roughly 10 minutes before we closed. My Operations manager and myself was collecting our register tills to do the final counts. As we walked from one end of the store back to the front with 3-4 tills in our hands a man walked up to us and tapped his hand on one of the tills and said "you got that covered don't you" we gave him an odd stare and chuckled (assuming it was meant to be funny) and my operations manager said "ya, we sure do." He then pulls his coat jacket aside and show us a large frame pistol and says "nope I got you covered" and then he left.
As I carry my firearm at almost all time's I know how important it is NOT to let everyone know you are carrying. What was this guy thinking? Trying to act cool?

Like plenty of people I know of he was probably just jumping at the occasion the show you his pistol or I would say you have good reason to CC at work, at least for a while. Thing is with some people they jump on any oppurtunity they can to show you that the scales are tipped in their favor, at least that's what they think! No way to say for sure, but that's definitely a little unsettling and I'd have one in the pipe for at least few months after an encounter like that.

That would have made me very uneasy. He walked up, tapped money, and said "i got you covered"!?!

I know it was likely bragging on his part, but that is just stupid.

He was slightly overweight but not obese. Had a dark outer jacket "that covered the firearm" and it was in a belt holster. Was about 6 foot. Looked kinda like some people I knew in Texas. Did not have a Massachusetts look to him.

In my opinion this guy is an idiot and does not represent those of us who carry very well. He should lose his license immediatly, if I was the manager it is quite possible that I would have called the local PD about this, sounds like a LEO wanna be. Part of the responsibility of carrying is to have common sense and obviously this clown had none. He is actually lucky he did not get shot, not sure what most people would have done if some stranger came up to them while carrying cash and brandished a firearm, many would think it could be a potential robbery about to unfold.

Almost all times will get you killed. Lucky this guy was nice, please don't leave home without it again.

Sounds like some nerd with no social skills just got himself a gun. He won't do that too many times, I think; I just hope no one gets hurt because of his behavior.

Sounds like a candidate for open carry. Let me guess he was a overweight toad with nothing in his pants but a ccw badge, a flashlight and a can of mace.

So, are you stereotyping open carriers here, or am I reading too much into your post?

Since he didn't try to rob you, I think he was trying to say, “Gotcher back, homie dude,” and he did it in the worst possible way. No one cares that (he thinks) he's an armed good guy when he acts like an armed question mark. Any normal person would realize that what he did was a bad, bad idea. You don't go up to strangers and show them your gun just because. You most certainly don't go up to strangers toting cash in a retail environment shortly before closing time and show them your gun.

I had something similar happen to me one night while working in retail, except the gooney bird, a fellow I'd never in my life seen before, grabbed his pistol … to hitch up his pants. That is, he grabbed the SIG on one side, the belt on the other, and hoisted away. He did this immediately after stepping inside the shop.

In some states this would be considered brandishing, illegal and he would/could loose his license or maybe even his life. A very stupid move.

The way I read this at first, it sounded like you WERE being robbed. I am afraid I might have hit the panic button (or whatever you do) in that situation. He was very lucky he didn't end up in jail.

He was very lucky he didn't end up in jail.
If he keeps doing that I'm sure he'll end up there. May or may not be illegal but very stupid and could easily be construed as attempted armed robbery. Some poor cashier will think that's what he's doing and throw the money at him.

Sounds like the perfect candidate to demonstrate the point about business owners and their right to restrict carry in their places of business ( see other thread going on)

He left while you were still counting the money? Well then he's not as good at "covering" you as he should be. Sounds like he needs to armchair up a little more on how a real mall cop operates.

You may want to rethink when you count your tills. Seems to me you may want to wait until the doors are locked and the store is closed before you start counting that out. Thats why its called "closed". No body but employees can come in. Even carrying it to a back room to count it creates an opportunity to snag the cash. You have to think about what you expose yourself to.

Now, the guy with the gun is complete boob and may have gotten himself arrested or worse, shot.
