American Tactical Imports 1911 Help $349 NIB

Never heard of any of those other than product from the Phillipines is generally regarded as good quality, but I can't say.

Sounds like a good price. Even Buds has them for $387 (which is still a good deal for a functional 1911 - if it's functional).

I got rid of my 1911 a while back (that one just jammed on me too much), and I've been itching to get another. Maybe soon. Too many things on the wishlist honestly. I really want a subcompact 9mm (Kel-tec PF9 looking likely), and from a utilitarian standpoint I'm tired of hunting ducks with a pump action shotgun, so I promised myself that I'd have a semi-auto shotgun before Thanksgiving .

I have the American classic ll metro arms 45 from the Philippines and have only shot it maybe 100 rounds but have been pleased with the pistol and will end up getting a sub compact 9mm based on the 1911 frame from them if I can find one at a price I can justify. Have only heard/read one bad review on the pistols coming from the philippines and for the money it seems to me they are on to something.

A guy put a bunch of rounds down range with a new GSG 1911 next to me last week.

One failure to eject ut of maybe 100 rds of Fed bulk. It exhibited good accuracy and though I didn't get t shoot it it felt surprisingly solid in the hand.

I'd definitely give one a go.

I went to a gun show and saw one this weekend. It was the GI model with a 4-1/4" barrel. I picked it up and looked it over. It felt very solid with absolutely no shake or rattle. Nice finished edges and good fit. Basic looking exterior. Mahogoney grips. Looked very basic GI mil-spec. They were offering it for $379.

I decided to purchase it and got it home. It appeared they soaked it in a barrel of oil before shipping. I field stripped it and was pleased with the innards. Nothing fancy- GI guide rod but there were no hacked machining marks or loose metal in it. All steel frame and no sharp or undressed edges. Took a while to get the oil off of it. Wanted to try it before the day was gone.

At the range it went through the first mags with no problems. I could tell right away that a quick field strip cleaning wasn't good enough. I then had a few problems with the slide staying open with a round in the mag. I switched mags to some Kimber mags and it still did it. I shot about 80 rounds through it. The recoil was sharper than my Kimber Raptor but not too bad.

I decided to take it home and give it a thorough cleaning. Took several hours to detail strip it and get everything clean. Lightly oiled the rails with Remington oil. Took it to the range the next day and the groups tightened way up and the first mag or two had the slide stay open on a round or two and the more I fed it the better it got. The last few mags ran through with no issues and the accuracy was very good. I will take it out again in a few days and see if I can feed 100 rds with no issues.

For the money vs the quality I am very pleased. Looks like this is going to be as good as a RIA for even less. My serial number indicates it is one of the first 300 they have made.

I will continue to write range reports on it to keep everyone updated. M initial response is very favorable after a good cleaning. All of my 1911 mags have worked in it.

If you can grab an American Classic from metro arms. Most 1911's from the Pines are good to go. They have mastered the art of the 1911 in that country.

Junk! They also market some truly POS AR15's, honestly, you'd be better off with a hi-point.

I was hoping you could elaborate on this. You have personal experience with the model the OP is asking about? I ask because I bought one and could not find any reviews on the net. I had been hoping to learn any pros and cons before purchasing but went ahead and picked one up because they weren't much of a hit on the budget. Most of the Phillipino 1911's I have seen have been solid performers- Charles Daley, RIA, Amscor etc.. How does this one differ from them? Thanks!

Why would he need personal experience to proclaim that something he has never used, or probably even seen, is crap? Are you new to gun forums or something?

My GSG .22 1911 has been great!

...bought it for $349 NIB at a gun show here in Portland, Oregon. Bought an extra factory magazine (they're not cheap, I think it was $35-ish). It had a few FTF's in the first 100 rounds or so, but since then it's behaved perfectly. It's fired everything I've fed it, basically every type of .22LR you'll find at your local sports/gun shop. I'm saving up for a Springfield EMP and wanted a 1911 after shooting some that friends had. The GSG was the closest thing to a 'real' 1911 I could afford, and it'll take most standard 1911 parts if you want to modify it.

BUT...:banghead:... I'm gonna put it up for sale tomorrow, only because of property taxes being due *SIGH* That's how I found this thread, googlin' around trying to figure out how to price my lightly used one... and figured it was time I stopped just trolling THR for info and joined up

For a well-built, German-made, inexpensive (and in .22LR, inexpensive to shoot!) 1911, I bet you'd be really happy with it.

I was incorrect these are not made by Armscor. They are made by Shooter Arms who is also in the Philippines.

If I were getting a Philippine 1911 I would get one made by Armscor. Same people who make RIA, parts for STI Spartans, Citidel & High Standard... I might be missing one or two of the other name plates these guns are sold under.

They are all basically the same guns running out of the same factory with slight changes in sights, safeties and finish.

They have a decent rep and for the money are good guns. Finish can be rough and they do not always have a consistent fit but they are shooters and if you are looking for a 1911 on a budget they are an option.

Personally i prefer used Colts but YMMV....

Thanks for the complement but you are 100% correct.

I stand corrected... They are infact made by Shooters Arms. I am wrong about Metro Arms. They are associatd with Firestorm not Armscor.

I personally lump all the Philippino 1911s into the same category.

If I had to choose one it would be the RIA. Better track record and more of a known quantity.

yep, made by SAM (Shooters Arms Mfg) in the Philippines and imported by ATI.

the other 2 Mfg's in the PI are Armscor and Metro Arms.

They are junk, compared to other 1911's in the $400-$500 range, your better off with the STI, Armscorp or the Remington R1.

You get what you pay for.

I haven't heard that SAM pistols are junk--or even anything good, bad, or otherwise.

I have only heard great things about the Metro Arms series of pistols--in fact I have heard that they are generally even better than RIA (in finish). But their customer service is supposedly nowhere in the same league as RIA as per one of the 1911 forums. That is what seals the deal for me and my preference for RIA. And I think that is what rellascout was alluding to as well.

I would get an STI or Remington (or Springer) if I felt like paying the difference in price, but I don't. I have too many other priorities in life to pay for pursuit of the last few % improvement.

xr1200, careful of the statement "you get what you pay for". The object of marketing is that you DON'T get what you pay for. That's why if you aren't as concerned about concepts such as brand equity or channel support, you can get more than what you paid for. And that is my mission.

Metro Arms American Classic ll's finish is slightly better than RIA or at least in the few I have handled.

Both if you get a good one (chances are you will) will do the job and make you happy especially if you are shooting next to a guy who paid $1000 for his problem child. Smug grin, dollars in the bank, more ammo, and ego is satisfied. Happiness in your lane.

Well, I got mine last night and I LOVE IT!!

I am not an expert, and I do not know jack about fit and finish but I know that I wanted to snuggle up with it instead of my wife last night

I got the GI model. I did do a simple breakdown, "wiggled" stuff to see if anything was loose and looked for burs/tool marks as I have seen mentioned on here and found none.

I was also suprised (As was my friend the FFL holder) when we noticed it takes three signatures and a comprehensive checklist to get out the factory door.

And no sky, I locked it away as we need to spend some time alone, getting to know each other before it can replace my revolver that lives in my nightstand
