If I buy a gun online it costs me $96 to complete the transfer through the FFL gunstore near the route that I take back from work.

This is very high, but I have no other convenient choice that I am aware of.

If you're OK with older guns, you could get your own 03FFL for (I think) $30 for 3 years. Then you can have qualifying guns sent directly to your house, and you can buy them in person out-of-state. It also qualifies you for dealer newsletters and discounts from several major online companies, like Graf's, SOG, and Midway.

(IANAL, and I don't know how this federal license interacts with NJ's permits)

Some places in CA charged anywhere from $100-150. Freakin' ridiculous. There are FFL search engines out there and databanks with online gun retailers.

So glad I moved. $25 seems to be the normal going rate with some people going lower if you are a CCW holder or mil/leo.

A C&R FFL is no good in NJ. In addition to an FFL one must also have a license from NJ to be a gun dealer/smith/etc. as well. NJ law also does not recognize any such thing as "antique" or black powder. Whether it's a 16th century Arquebus or a brand new FN SCAR, it needs the same paperwork and licensing.

OP: I am guessing you're referring to NJ Firearms Guild in Rahway. Nice shop but the prices are insane. I would not pay $96 for a transfer. Sadly the only good transfers in NJ are at Brick Armory and Shore Shot and they're still expensive at ~$50.

Wow! The guy I use only charges $15! But I'm in CO, and he's a retired gent that does it at home. Makes a pretty good income doing so, as I understand it. He's a busy man.

NICS is free. However, NJ is one of several states that acts as the Point of Contact for NICS checks, meaning here in NJ, the background check is processed by the NJ State Police. And they charge a fee... $16.20, last time I knew (plus 7% sales tax, of course). It's billed right to the FFL's phone bill, as it's a 900 number.

My FFL is about 40 miles away. He is my FFL because he charges $0 for active duty military. He would not take the $20 I offered when I got my 8mm Lebel Rifle delivered through him. I noticed he drinks Pabst Blue Ribbon, though. So I am thinking next time I will take at least a 6 pack on ice and see if he CAN refuse that! :D

To the OP,

Dude, move into free America. You will like it here, we promise! Seriously...:D

Supply and demand are at work there.

Last time I looked the matter up, NJ only had 800 or so FFLs. I'm fairly certain there are that many FFLs in my county.

To be an FFL in NJ is a precarious thing. There's lots of anecdotal evidence that there is an unwritten policy of keeping the FFLs numbers low, and keeping them in line and in fear.

One local guy charges $25 (+$10 state fee). Another guy a few miles away wants $100...

$15 is as much as I have ever paid.

But then I have more sense than to live in a place like NJ to begin with.

Damn, and I thought $35 was high! I realize things are more complicated in NJ, but they're not legally required to charge you a cent.

I would look for someone who is retired or doesn't get much business; they'd be in a position to bargain. It's not like it's a whole lot of effort on their part anyway.

LT, a six pack should be the least you bring him.

PBT is pretty cheap swill.

Me myself? I'd spring for a 12 pack and ice it for him. Just sayin'

$96? What a freaking ripoff! You know, I've said it before: FFL transfer fees are free money for the dealer. The FFL doesn't have to pay to order it, ship it, stock it. Doesn't have to spend a dime on it. All he has to do is spend 1 minute filling out a form and make a quick phone call, all things he would have to do anyway on a firearm bought in his shop. I really don't mind if they charge $20 for this service, as it does take a little effort and time away from other shop duties. But any more than that is just greedy.

Fact is, a dealer stands to gain MORE money by advertising they do FFL transfers at a fair price than they do by not advertising it and charging you through the nose when you ask. No dealer has everything you want all the time, and lots of customers these days know exactly what they want.

A local gun store advertises, right on their website and business card, that they do Internet gun transfers. They only charge $20 for the service. If they didn't offer this service, I'd never have set foot in their shop in the first place. But because they did this, I've taken advantage of the service multiple times and been in their shop and looked around. I haven't bought anything from them, other than a holster, but the fact is that it got me in the door, and got me looking at their selection. And they've still got a fair deal of money from me that they otherwise would not have had. And because they got me in the door, and were friendly and fair with me, myself and other people are far more likely to buy from them. It's not just a transfer service; it's a way to get potential customers in the door and get them familiar with their shop.

Supply......demand. He wouldn't charge that much if no one was willing to pay it.
Unless they really don't want to do it, and that's the whole point. A lot of dealers take the bad attitude of, "You didn't buy it from me, so why should I help you?" They don't want to do it, so they jack the price up insanely high to either make you go somewhere else or erase any price savings you got online, thereby making their own inventory more appealing. Personally, I find that type of attitude disgusting, and it merely ensures I will NEVER buy anything from them.

$15 is the lowest locally, most range from $25 to $35. Gander Mountain is $75. The biggest pain is the NY CoBIS fired case requirement that can add $100 to a GB price.
