I've heard of FFLs wanting 20% of the gun's value - ie $200-400 on a good 1911 pistol! Insanity!
And yes, FFLs can be emailed now. Individual sellers do NOT have to have an FFL to ship the gun through private couriers (UPS, FedEx), only to use the US Mail do you need an FFL. When I sell guns online, I generally do the shipping myself. The FFL sends me his info directly, I check his address on the ATF's "FFL E-Z-Check" website, and I only ship guns to the registered address.
Only once has a receiving FFL not wanted to send me his info, because he was worried I would use his FFL to try and buy guns. I called him and convinced him and that was the only hitch I've ever had.
