Is there anyplace I can find some "cheap" ammo in 30-06. This ammo will be used for target shooting only. I dont need 1 inch groups at 100 yards, All i need is to be able to hit a pie plate at 100 yards. (only reason i want some cheap ammo is for my 03-a3 when my friends want to shoot it a few times)

The CMP is the cheapest I have seen. It is Greek surplus HXP They typically have it for .50 cents a round, but right now have it for $108 for 240 rounds in a 50 cal can. Good ammo and one of the best prices.

I would try the Prvi Partizan from Midway. $14.29/20. They are reloadable and the accuracy is better than expected. I bought 5 boxes just to see if it was any good and I have been pleasantly surprised. I reloaded with the budget Remington core lokt bulk bullets for target practice, no issues with the brass at all.

I had some surplus '06 that was corrosive. Be sure to clean your rifle after useing it.

Our local Walmart sells Federal Power Shok 30-06 ammo in 150 grain and 180 grain. It's $13.97 a box and then if you buy 2 boxes Federal offers a mail in rebate for $5 back or $2.50 back if you buy one box. That's the cheapest I've seen even without the rebate.

+2 on the Prvi Partizan. It's cheap, but also plenty accurate. Their soft points work just fine on deer, too.

As stated above, the CMP Greek surplus is the way to go for your application. It is all non corrosive.

Danged if my Garand doesn't LOVE that HXP! Similar groups but a little high right with Federal 180-gr (that Wally price is the bomb-diggity) and a Schuster adjustable gas plug.

+1 on the CMP ammo. Great accurate HXP ammo, and the brass is fully reloadable. If you buy the ammo for .50 per round, shoot it, and sell the brass for .15 each, the en bloc clips for $2 each, and the bandoleers and cardboard inserts for $4 per set, then your cost for ammo drops to $10 per bandoleer of 48 rounds, or $4.20 per 20 rounds, .21 cents per round. You can't even reload it for that.

But the heaviest high velocity stuff you can find. Uninstall any recoil pad and replace with a steel plate. Your friends will soon be looking elsewhere for someone else's rifle to shoot.

Anyone tried Golden Bear at 10.xx a box ?
I have; it is pretty decent stuff, but keep in mind it is steel cased ammo so you can't reload it. I believe it is a little hotter than the Greek surplus, but the Greek fodder is re-loadable (and similar in price). If you are looking for local ammo, WW has Fed. Power Shok for about $13/box and it shoots pretty decent too (and is SP so you can use it for hunting if you'd like).

:)

I was thinking reload also. I just figured up my '06 hunting round using core lokt bullets and it is about $6.25 per box of 20. That is using my brass of course.

Not quite, the GB is 145 grains@ 2445 fps and HXP is 150 grains @ 2750 fps.

I believe it is 2850fps, because it should be the same as Silver Bear (as far as the loading) which is listed as 2850 on the manufacturer's site (velocity for Golden Bear isn't listed). I trust them more than CTD. Besides 2445fps is mighty slow for .30-06Spd., especially if commercially loaded and using those wee 145gr. bullets.

:)

Buy a Mosin Nagant.
Rifle= around $100 (I've seen them as low as $75 though)
Ammo= surplus ammo (you can get a tin of about 450 for around $90)
7.62x54r is pretty much the Russian 30-06.
For another 50 bucks you can get an aftermarket stock for it too.

I agree.
Actually a guy on the CMP forum extensively cronographed the HXP got anywhere from 2750 to 2900 fps. I was playing it conservatively because many will split hairs on issues like this.
I'm sticking with HXP all the way. LC is great ammo too but MV is slightly less than HXP believe it or not.

I don't doubt it, HXP is some of the hottest '06 mil-surp. ammo available. Absolutely nothing wrong with it.
