Who makes a commander size 1911?

RIA and some of the smaller import companies do commander sized guns. Some of them can be hit or miss though.

american classic commander's are fairly inexpensive.

Pretty much everybody that makes 1911's makes a commander size model. However, if you want "inexpensive" you can forget about a bobtail.

Inexpensive = buy RIA. They even make a commander size 1911. Good guns, good customer service, good warranty. Can't go wrong.

Most don't make a true Commander length 4.25" barrel.

Some do. Standard factory pistols from S&W, Colt, ParaUSA, Sig, and Dan Wesson can be had with a bushing and 4.25" barrel. The semi-customs from Les Baer, Ed Brown, and Nighthawk (possibly Wilson, though I'm not sure) are also available in such a configuration, though are much more expensive.

Armscor, Kimber, & Springfield all use a 4" barrel and STI uses a 4.15" barrel. Most without a barrel bushing.

I carry a Smith and Wesson 1911pd Commander. It's scandium framed and is a pleasure to carry.

Depending your definition of inexpensive, it may meet the criteria. ~$700-$850.

JTQ pretty much summed it up, but instead of a "bobtail" why not get a commander slide on an officer size frame. Something like a SIG C3 or the dehorned SIG RCS. But without knowing a price range, or what GIJOEL considers inexpensive, I may be way out of the price ballpark. I would check out as many manufacturer's websights as possible, see what you want. my SIG RCS msrp was $1300+ I got mine for under $900. IF you intend to use this as a CCW then I would really consider tritium night sights a must.

Best bobtail I have seen for the price is the Dan Wesson, not cheap though. If you want a cheaper bobtail, you need to get a RIA and see if a gunsmith will do it for you, a real gunsmith not just any gunsmith.

Of course by the time you buy the parts and the smith does the work you're still not gonna be in the cheap area. When it comes to a "custom" styled 1911 cheap goes out the window.

Just curious are you wanting a bobtail for looks, just to have one, or trying to make the gun easier to conceal. I have a small frame so a 1911 or any near full size gun is hard for me to hide easily.

If going with a bobtail, I wouldn't limit myself to a commander personally. I like the full size when shooting the little extra barrel goes a long way in accuracy, recoil (2nd shot), and getting a better powder burn (longer range).

If you're doing yourself, get a used gun. The only thing I can think of would be a used Springfield. If you find one that has a lot of wear marks you could get if pretty cheap. If you are doing a bobtail, you're gonna be looking at refinishing the gun anyway.

I just picked up an American Classic commander for $425 OTD. I'm planning on bobtailing it myself and am VERY happy with the fit. Need a bushing wrench to tear it down, it's that tight. Muzzle crown is flush with the bushing. The finish is beautiful. So much so that I am waiting a bit to bobtail it just to enjoy the finish a while.

I'm looking at getting a Kimber Pro Carry II in the next week, and i believe it is fairly close to the Colt Commander in size. Anyone have experience with the Pro Carry II?

The American Classic Commander is on my short list. Should be easy to buy one for around $450 or less. It would make a great platform for a bobtail.

I bought an ATI GX45 GI which is a 4-1/4" Commander model. I have about 600rds through it and it has been a very nice gun- especially for the money. $380 Made in the Phillipines and it is GI spec. Might be a good starter gun for customizing.

I was handling an RIA commander at the gun show this weekend. Looked good for about $450.

When S&W introduces the new Enhanced Series SW1911's at the Shot Show, there will be a couple of 4.25" Commanders on the list.

The S&W website should have them listed after the Shot Show, I'm told.

Personally, I'm very interested in the model that seems to have a black finish Scandium Commander frame and a stainless slide. There appears to be a similar model with a Melonite treated slide, too. On another forum it was posted that the E-Series guns will be TFP models (titanium firing pins), which may mean no firing pin safeties (like the existing TFP model, hopefully).

I'll wait to confirm the product specs.

Honestly, for around the $500 mark, you're basically limited to Filipino-made 1911s. You can him-haw around and maybe find a better quality gun that is used for a little more than $500. But you're pretty much confined to Armscor-made guns with the various names.

I agree. The criteria limits the choices. Finding an non-Filipino commander under $500 is going a tough call. The bobtail is out of the question.

The RIA is called the "Midsize" model, and it's 4", not 4.25". And didn't Colt used to offer a pistol with a Commmander slide on an Officers' frame? Not sure what it was called...CCP maybe? <found it, Colt CCO.>
