410 over under, 45 LC conversion?

Recently i've been thinking an O/U rifle in a smaller caliber might be a fun rifle. I was thinking about it yesterday and realized the Taurus judge can shoot a 410 round or the 45 Long Colt. Well i've gotten to thinking and might it be possible/pheasable the get a gunsmith to convert a 410 O/U to an Over Under 45 LC rifle? Or does anyone know of something pre-existing like i'm looking for?

Any input, information, or even opinions would be very much appreciated.

The main issue would be the barrels, since the bore of a .410 is .410" (duh), while a .45 Colt is .452" . I doubt there would be enough metal around the barrel for the gunsmith to ream it out to the correct bore diameter so he would likely have to replace the barrels, which for an O/U shotgun would probably be prohibitively expensive.

.410 and .45LC SAAMI pressures are pretty much the same (12,500 for 2.5" .410 vs 14,000 for .45LC), so action strength shouldn't be an issue.

You then would have to pay the smith to make the barrels rifled. Also to consider is the working pressure of 410 versus 45Colt - the Colt, IIRC, is just a tad too high for safe firing in a 410 frame gun. Now, taking the 45 and converting to 410 would solve that issue. The bore size, as already mentioned is another issue

So the problem with this would be the bore diamater? And the frame would be unsafe under the new pressures? If the frame would be alright, I could just get a custom made barrel set so to speak and even then switch it back and forth between shotgun and rifle, thatd be a neat gun idea I think. Sorry guys i'll admit i'm not the brightest so please forgive me if i'm not understanding this properly.

Yep, you'd be better off going from 45 to 410 than the other around, although I can't remember ever seeing a double 45 lc rifle before

Thats the thing. I've been wanting an over under rifle nor rifle shotgun combo just rifle. More in a carbine size and preferably in a smaller caliber. I don't even know if they exist though, as I sure as heck haven't been able to find one.

So I thought about a shotgun and then remembered the Taurus Judge and though "Hey this might work" Guess not though. Thanks for the help and input though. I very much appreciate it.

I think I might just look for like and O/U 410 thats rifled for slugs. That just might solve my problem there.

Years ago I had a Springfield Scout M6 22/410 reamed and rifled for 45 Colt. Cost me $135. I paid $109 for the gun new. Unfortunately the gunsmith that did it has passed away. Yes, it can be done. Bring money.

You're probably better off buying a Rossi Circuit Judge, since it can fire both with a simple change of a choke. The one I just acquired has a rifled barrel, but with a cylinder bore choke for use of the .45LC, and a straight-rifled choke(The rifling doesn't curve, allowing the shot to stabilize from the spin and keep the grouping respectable).

I've yet to fire it, but it seems like a solid platform, and would probably be easier to take care of than modifying an existing platform.

Not over and under, but I have always had a thing for the little H&R CR-45LC carbine. Hard to imagine a handier companion piece to a .45 Long Colt revolver.

You could probably get a 410 double shotgun to fire 45 Colt with the application of a good deal of money.

Getting the two barrels to hit anywhere near one another would require the application of a LOT of money.

Regulating barrels need not be expensive, just have your gunsmith use the wedge system the Valmet double rifles use.

If you really want an.........

........over/under in .45/.410, just wait a year or two. Judging by the results of this SHOT show, if it can be done with a .45/.410, it will be done with a .45/.410! Yes, pun intended! :neener:

BTW, I don't personally have anything against the Judge or any other combo firearm. I used to have one of those H&R .45/.410s and it was fun. Didn't pattern as well as the cheap Snake Charmer that I still have as a pest gun. The Circuit Judge caught my eye since they have a smoothbore only model. Or at least they did when first introduced, I haven't checked their website lately.

cane, that is a cool site. If I ever get back to work steady, I can see my coach gun becoming a double rifle or a combo rifle/shotgun. Of course I could just shoot a slug out of one barrel as well. But what fun is that?

Are those just chamber inserts? - Looks like a 12 or 16 will handle the 45LC, but then you still have the issue with no rifling to stabilize the projectile.

Still think going from 45 LC to 410, with a smooth-bore choke at the end, would be the most practical for accuracy and cost

Irish Bird Dog said it all, I would have purchaased a Judge, and it's companion Rifle long ago if they werent out lawed in California.. I think this is what you want, I have read on both and they have all recieved good reviews.. If legal where you live go for it.

A better option for the .45 Colt revolver companion piece would be a M92 lever action w/20" bbl or even the 16" bbl model. A repeater is better than a little single shot like the H&R.....might weigh a bit more but will carry nice.....

Problem there is it might be a tuff challenge to regulate the bbls to the same point of impact............& no real sights to use....

The RIFLING is built into the 10" bbl of the insert.....which is longer then most .45 Colt revolver bbls anyway....problem solved!
