On Tomahawks

Gents;

My 1st post. I'm not an expert in anything, but a perpetual student of many things, one of which is the tomahawk. I can't afford a proper hawk, but found something that quacked like a duck at Home Depot. I wrestled with it till I could get an edge on it. Now it resides at my side of the bed, paired with an EK dagger (much to my wifes consternation).

Regards Mr. Mclemore's books and DVD, his drawings are legendary, and they are the best training resource I have found. I bought the Big knife and the tomahawk series. I think it's a good investment. Now I just need to find some place to set up a practice area so I don't freak out the neighbors (more then I have already

)

I will eventually get a proper belt axe, but for now, this set up will do if I will do.

Old old thread.

I bought a Cold Steel Trail Hawk a while back. I bought it mostly as a novelty. I ended up stripping the paint and cold bluing the head, then I sanded the handle and stained it.

My 11 year old claimed the tomahawk shortly after, so I scrounged a 14' diameter X 4' log and hung it on the back porch to give him a target. He routinely practives his "moves" (no throwing allowed) with various edged weapons. BTW, we live in the countryside with horses in our backyard, so this isn't all that bizarre.

I don't regret buying the tomahawk, yet.

I wouldn't mind setting up a throwing target in my back yard, but I live in the city, and frankly I've already thrown a few too many tennis balls over the fence while playing with the dogs. A poor toss with a tomahawk would be a little harder to shrug off.

Nice hawk and practice log tho. I approve!

Cold Steel has some decently priced offerings in the 25-45 dollar price range. The emerson though was not as cost effective.

Isn't a tomahawk somewhat limited to use against a single opponant? I have read that once buried in an enemys skull they are rather difficult to remove and often require you to put your foot on the downed persons head and rock it back and forth a few times to get it out.

That's the fun part!

DaisyCutter, that's a cool setup. I'm gonna have to work up something like that for my 12-year-old twins. I have a couple hawks that they (and I) throw a bit. I'm hanging the log somewhere further away from the house, though.

There's usually a hammer or flat poll. I tend to be a big believer in impact instead of cutting or piercing to instantly stop an attack.

I agree I saw my Dad drop a drunk with a 20 oz plumb hammer and he just used the handle by reversing his grip on the hammer.

Mine was made for me YEARS ago by a THR member. Forged from leaf springs, and hafted to a piece of osage orange.

Brian, That one was made buy moosetrax forge and I got it off of 'bay.
He's since stopped making them or at least stopped putting them on 'bay.
If he was I'd have more than one.

That is more like what I want, the Cold Steel Trail hawk is close, but the bit width is a little small for what I want and their axe that has a good shape doesn't have a poll head. I have contacted Moosetrax forge about them making them or not.

Moose Trax forge does their own forging, it is the real thing, not cut down from another shape.
