I'm not superstitious, but this was a rough trip to the range...

So I braved the winter storm and drove to the local indoor range bringing my 5.5" SS Bisley Blackhawk in .45LC, my 3" Uberti .45LC with birdshead grip, and the new Kel Tec P3AT that my fiancee bought me for Christmas. I also brought a variety of ammo with me, most of which I had never tried before. More on that later...

First up, my new lil .380.

Pop! Pop! *jam*

(clears the jam)

Pop! Pop! Pop!

"Hmmm, I'm all over the paper at 7 yards, even missed it once!"

That continues for about 50 rounds.

"Eff this, time for some action."

I load up the Blackhawk with standard pressure Buffalo Bore pushing a 255gr Keith bullet at 1000fps.

Boom! *clickety-click* Boom! ...and so it continued, and there was much rejoicing. Awesome round, kicks like a .357 in that Blackhawk and accurate to boot.

"Okay time for the bad mammer-jammers, the Buffalo Bore 325gr L.B.T. - L.F.N. hauling butt at 1325fps."

BOOM!!!

BOOM!!! "I think the hammer is biting the web of my thumb under recoil..." :uhoh:

BOOM!!! "Yep, that's definitely drawing blood."

One cylinder of those was enough to put two deep gouges in my hand. I think it may be time for a shooting glove. So I go to extract the casings and one was stuck so tight I could not get it out no matter what I did. So now that meant the Blackhawk was down for the count until I could go home and work on it. :cuss:

Time for the Uberti. "I think I'll try those standard pressure Buffalo Bore rounds first."

BOOM!!! "Dang! Lots more flash and recoil for these in the little birdshead!" :uhoh:

After a cylinder of those it was time for some cowboy-level handloads I got with the gun. 160gr L.F.N. at about 800fps, tops.

Bang! *click-click-click-click* Bang! ...and so on. Love those rounds, they recoil like a .38 but throw some cool sparks and are pretty accurate.

"Hmmm, I wanna try this snake shot in the Uberti."

Bang!

(cylinder locks up)

The spent casing is flopping around in the chamber and locking up the gun but not coming out any further than 1/8". :scrutiny:

I dunno. My hand is bleeding, I have two revolvers locked up, and my new mousegun is the proverbial "Jam-o-matic POS". :fire:

I finished off my last box of .380 in the Keltec and it was much better, hitting consistently, ejecting casings more consistently, and not jamming, but then one of the pins was walking out of the frame. :what: :banghead:

So then I said that's it for me, time to go home... Ugh...

And just before you left the house, you looked out the window at the weather and said, "Hm -- how bad can it get?"

Sorry to hear your range time was less than stellar.

I went to my range today, too, and didn't do so well either. Admittedly I had an appointment to keep and was in a hurry to get through the day's shooting plan.

Handloads in the CZ 75 were pretty good. Previously untested 115gr lead hollowpoints were softer than expected but cycled the slide reliably and were probably pretty accurate. I strung them vertically as I sometimes do when I've been neglecting practice; I let my sight picture wander between covering POA and lollipopping it. Same thing happened with 124gr JHPs.

Given my temporary inability to hold a consistent sight picture offhand, actual accuracy for both these loads is still unknown. At least I know they feed and cycle and hit CoM even on a bad day.

Put a mag of factory reload 165gr JHPs through the Glock 22, my primary HD pistol. Same result.

No malfunctions on the guns' part, but not a good day for the shooter. So, maybe Friday 13th isn't the best day to go to the range for anyone. Or maybe when you've missed practice and your concentration is off, you just have to be prepared to shoot badly.

Everybody says revolvers are very reliable but that hasn't been my experience, I have way more luck with my 45 autos.

That's why at least one .22 pistol accompanies me on all range trips.. go get yours and do it again!

Always bring a gun that you know works! This is good advice, it helps you keep your sanity and lets you go home on a better note.

I had a range session like that where almost every gun I had developed some type of issue, one of them was an AK that jammed! AK's are nver supposed to jam, but I had a stcuk cartridge case. Prolly the ammo (Wolf) but still.

I went home fixed everything, and it all works fine, but they decided to all malfunction at once. Frustrating.
