Hey all. Long time gun owner, first time AR owner. I've got a tactical Mossberg 500 for HD, a couple handguns for CC, but wanted something for longer range target practice and coyote slaying.

I've owned a few cheap 22lrs and an AK47, but never a rifle in this configuration.

As a fireman, I get LE discount at my local shop, so I picked up the Smith & Wesson M&P15OR. $759 plus tax. A little over $300 off retail.

I added a Redfield 3-9x40mm scope and appropriate mount for the intended coyote duty.

Day of purchase:

Since purchase I've added a Tapco Intrafuse handguard and MFT E-VOLV battle stock attachment for an improved cheek weld. Planning on getting a flashlight mount, and possibly going to plunk an Eotech red-dot or some pop-up iron sights so the thing can be useful for CQ.

So, thoughts? Mod paths? Vital changes?

Nope, you seem to be doing just fine!

Only suggestion I'd make is to put a 45 degree mount on it somewhere to put a micro red dot. That way, you have both long range and cqb covered simultaneously. That's what I'd do to keep that scope on it.

Welcome to THR!

Never thought of the 45 degree sight. That's a good idea. Will it require an adjustment to my head position, or is it a movement free transition?

You tilt the rifle. Mount the optic on the side of the rifle that corresponds with your dominant eye, tilt rifle, fire accordingly. That way, you've got both bases covered.

Good purchase for your first AR. Can't go wrong with S&W, and you bought it for an excellent deal thanks to your career field.

I would second the suggestion of getting some type of BUIS, maybe the 45degree ones, or just go with a quality set like Troy or Midwest Industries.

Congrats and happy shooting!

It looks like it will be a tight squeeze mounting a 45 degree base. The Tapco intrafuse hg isn't a solid mount like a free float handguard, so I wouldn't trust it for anything but flashlights and forward grips.

You can mount your scope closer to the rear, but then you would benefit from a tactical type charging handle. From the looks of it you are at the limit of the eye relief for conventional non extended eye relief scopes.

If you decide on an optic, I highly recommend the Aimpoint Pro. They are a great bargain at $400 with a QD mount and spacer for AR use. A plus is that they have been released to the general public, so midway usa carries them. I have one on my USC/UMP UMP conversion and I am extremely pleased. Magpul backup sights are a great option to complete the package.

Nice AR...

I also picked-up a Colt 6920, and slap a red-dot or whatever I've got lying around for whatever I'm shootin'. Fantastic rifles. Should have done it a long time ago.

I like your style. Redfields are awesome. Personally I hate canting my rifle so I'm going to get a mini red dot to go on top of this scope mount. The gun wears an Aimpoint knock off for everyday use.

I was planning on getting a better/longer charging handle and moving the scope back. I JUST bought this rifle. Haven't even fired or gotten familiar with it. I am aware of the limitations of the foregrip, but thank you for mentioning them. It'll only be used for a light and bipod.

I was planning on mounting the offset sights on the rear, right over the charging handle, and on the small rail in front of the foregrip. Is this common practice?

nice buy,!! did you put that scope on it ? it looks a bit to far forward ? dose it feel right , is it right there when you pull up the gun , or do you find yourself pushing your head up to it ? I see post #16 is set about the same , but post #15 is way back . mine is about 1 1/2" back of the charge handle

I see I was a bit slow,,, you plain on moveing the scope back ,

Yeah, I set the rifle up just to get a look at it. She needs some work for sure. Once I've got it dialed and accurate I'll repost with what I've learned.

He can mount the front sight to the receiver height railed gas block since his rifle is the OR variant of the M&P15.

Leave the scope where it is, and try shooting it that way first. With most rifles the grip comes off the bottom of the receiver, but with AR-15s the grip is under the receiver. This brings the scope closer to your eye to start with. Those cantilevered scope mounts put the glass forward for a reason. The scope should also be forward of the charging handle to ease manipulation.

Yes it is, and that's exactly where they should be mounted to maximize sight radius and provide the quickest sight picture.

Glad I could help in some small way. You may still need to tweak the scope placement to optimize it, but only shooting will tell you that. The US Military also teaches touches the tip of your nose to the back of the charging handle as a reference point for repeatable cheek weld.

That is what I was thinking when I was looking into offset sights....but it is so much faster and easier to slightly cant the rifle than to lift your head up and lose your cheek weld.

It seems like tilting would just be a more simple and reliable action. It'd take some consistent training, but that should be a given.

Change as little as you need to to get it how you want then stop. Don't add/change things just because.
