New XDM 5.25

I have one of the original XD Tactical models in 9mm that I have been shooting for a while and have been quite happy with it. Then in February I won a new XDM 9mm and it has since become my car gun, 19+1 rounds just seems comforting. I had been thinking about a new pistol for IDPA/3 gun shooting since I am at a disadvantage with the .40 I usually shoot, more recoil just leads to slightly lower split times no matter how accurate the pistol.

I had been thinking about one of these for a while but had not got to hold one until yesterday. Academy Sports had them on sale and happened to have one in stock. This is the 9mm, 5.25" barrel, lightened slide, adjustable rear and fiber optic front site, and comes with 3 mags plus double mag holder and holster. I'm going to shoot this a few weeks to get the trigger broke in and then decide if I want to switch to the Springer Precision trigger kit. It's really just for range use and shooting games.

I think MSRP is either 749 or 799. Academy had them for $699.

Well for a little update. I've been in East Africa on business for a bit so haven't had time to shoot it as much as I would like. Now keep in mind it's just a competition gun for me so that's how I evaluate it.

I haven't kept any targets for it, but I will in the future, shooting at 10 yards it's a little more accurate than my 4.5" XDm. I average about 2" with the 4.5" model and with a variety of ammo the 5.25" seems to shoot around 1.5". I know that's no good compared to the pistoleros here but that's why I gave up bullseye shooting 20 years ago, just not steady enough anymore.

The sights are excellent for competition shooting, the fiber optic front really stands out nicely. Among different ammo I've shot in it I tried some 147gr. WWB ammo and it really liked that, very soft shooting, I was really surprised at how much it seemed to change the feel of the pistol. And finally, I am going to go ahead and get the Springer Precision trigger kit, I just feel the trigger pull on this one is a little long and about 1 lb too heavy for a competition only pistol. If it was going to be a carry gun I would leave it as is though.

Well Powder, keep in mind different people have different desires in a match trigger. I'm used to shooting a Witness Elite Match which has about as good a factory single action trigger as you will ever find, 2.5 pounds and crisp as breaking glass. Compared to that the XDM is long and heavy, if you compare it to a production Glock etc. then it's just fine as is. I will say that a great many competition shooters have aftermarket triggers in their Glocks also, the same goes for CZ and most other brands.
