I bought one of these for a very appropriate pre panic price. Flattop with a few magpul goodies.

Being a complete newb to pistol Cal ar's could you guys take the time to educate me on some of the ins and outs about the 9mm ar15 in terms of maintenance, modifications, handloads and accuracy

Thanks in advance.

from what I understand all of the glock style 9mms are very hit or miss with reliability to include olympic and lone wolf(I think). the colt style ARs normally function well enough but are very picky about magazines. I have a model 1 sales AR15(home build on a DPMS lower receiver with 9mm magazine adapter block) that does very well with colt and metal form magazines and so far has had no issues with a promag 10 rounder I just bought but it's too early for me to say with certainty that it's reliable.
model 1 sales is not held in high regard so you will probably have to just take the leap with whoever you choose and hope that it works.

I spent nearly a year trying to figure out why my AR wouldn't function(lots of stovepipes) and nobody ventured beyond the fact that it's a model 1 build and finally as a last ditch effort I bought a metal form magazine and it's functioned 100% ever since unless I switch back to the other 3 magazines that I had at the time so I know with certainty that it is just a problem with mags.

in response to your questions of maintenance it is no different than cleaning a 223 or other caliber AR15. takedown is all the same as other AR15s. mine is just short of MOA at 100 yards but accuracy drops off fast past 150 yards due to low velocity.

Nice furniture!

That looks like a fun gun.

And on the topic of fun guns I have no delusions of using mine to fight a living out of the zombie filled post apocalyptic world. Its a cheap to shoot (reload for) fun gun for me n the boys to enjoy.

agreed. now that 122112 is gone and the last known apocalypse scare of our age is finally done and over with I see no reason to plan for a zombie apocalypse and if I do need to fight my way out of a bad situation then I have a 223 AR for that, the 9mm is solely a fun gun with MAYBE and that's a big maybe, possibly used for hunting if I ever get drawn for a spare doe tag. so far all this has killed is paper, fence posts and the occasional tweety bird.

Based on my research and lust for a 9mm AR, I'm leaning towards the CMMG or Yankee Hill uppers using Colt-style magazines.

No experience with the Glock mag carbine, but I bought a Rock River LAR-9 a few years ago and while it was initially stiff, it has been generally problem free. Liberal application of lube and get to shooting.

I use the modified Uzi mags, and the RR has a dedicated lower so no magazine block to fiddle with.

Loads are cast 9mm over Bullseye and mixed brass...I just use my pistol load and it shoots great. I zero at 50 yards, and my 5 year old has no problem whacking clays with the EOtech on top. Carbine is blowback operated, so no gas port to worry about filling up with lead. There is a faux gas block on the rifle, and I contemplated removing it, but I liked the stepped appearance from rail, to gas block, to barrel. Furniture is Magpul UDE, sold by Larue.

IMHO, it's a urban SD rifle...No need for a longer zero or any BDC to shoot the longer distances. I've plinked at 200y with it, and it gets close enough, but any further than that and I'll grab a real rifle. I chose the EOtech because it meets those requirements perfectly. EOtech is mounted on a Larue QD mount.

Maintenance is normal for the AR.....solvent, brush, rag and lube. Nothing special, although I do have to scrape the brake clean occasionally.

Honestly, it's the one AR type that I introduce new shooters with. Less muzzle blast than the 223 and it's light weight are easy to deal with.

I will mention this....magazines (32 round ones) are ridiculously difficult to load. I was lining up cartridges on my tailgate and pushing the magazine down to stuff them in. Then I found my brain and bought a 9mm SMG LULA tool. No problems since.

Be prepared for some serious ammo usage. I go through easily a couple hundred rounds every time I touch it. ;) At 32 rounds a mag, it adds up quick.

I've got the Olympic .40S&W AR that takes modified Glock mags. Its marked LEO and appears to have been build during the ban.

Mine works well, even with the Korean 32 rounders. Modifying the mags is a bit of a PITA but the mag well block comes out easily and serves as a template to mark where you have to cut for the mag catch.

Mags don't drop free, my only real complaint besides some non standard mods to the lower and upper.

Satisfying "thump" when the 180gr slugs hit the backstop. I shoot mostly hard cast reloads since its a blowback with no gas system to foul.

Wouldn't be my first choice for a firefight, but its a lot of fun to shoot.

this is precisely why I just bought a ten rounder....more reloading time, less time burning through my stockpiles.

I use sten mags with my Olympic 9mm upper. I bought a mag block, I think it was called a Socom block. Anyway, I used it to shoot plates in pistol and carbine class. Mine works great.

I probably put at least 1/2 a pallet of steel case ammo through it over the time I have had it. I could hit plates easily out to 100 yds, although sometimes it didn't have enough power to knock the heavier ones down at that range.

I bought a bunch of sten mags for 6 bucks ea at the Knob Creek shoot about 15 years ago, and a mag loader which is a necessity.

Ammo is too expensive for me to have that kind of fun these days, but I still have the upper and enjoy shooting it from time to time.

I don't know about the glock mag adapter, but if you can find one of the mag blocks and pick up a dozen sten mags, it could be an option for you if glock mags become unobtainable.

Get a Maglula to load mags. It makes it so easy. I can't imagine loading 20 or 30 round mags more than a time or two without it.

I have a RRA 9MM AR. It uses modified Uzi mags or Colt mags. C Products used to make a good Colt style mag for them and mine work great.

Lots of cheap, low recoil, fun. Everyone who shoots it likes it.

RW, is that just the upper or a complete rifle? Mine was an upper only and I had loads of trouble getting it to re-set the hammer until I replaced the entire trigger assembly.

Mine drops a lot of fouling in the receiver but the barrel keeps surprisingly clean. Unlike a .223 AR, it never gets hot. It's not a precision rifle, at least mine isn't. But I don't have MOA expectations.

Lots of fun, cheap to shoot and may increase your desire for a suppressor. I agree with a mag loader too. Loading mags by hand may decrease your will to live.

I shot it today and it ran 100%

Every round from weak to spicy ejected and reset everything for the next shot flawlessly. Mags dropped free and the BHO worked.

Accuracy was very very good with 147g xtp handloads hovering right at 1.25" @50 and not quite twice that at 100. Velocities for the 147 with a maximum load of hs6 was right at 1200fps

Awesome. Glad it's living up to your expectations.

What mods are you going to make?

Nice buy.
I had the A2 Sten gun magazine version of the Oly, super reliable.

What's neat about the AR 9mm's is they seem to have far less recoil than the Ruger PC9 or Marlin Camp.

Handloads? No change from your pistol loads. Just no super weak loads that might lodge a bullet or jacket in the bore, especially with JHPs. 1200 fps with a 147 is solid power.

Nothing major. Swap to a rifle length fft, probably upgrade to a better trigger, mabye a heavy buffer later. Mabye pick up another trijicon reflex to swap between the DNZ mounted scope you see.

Its already had the stock and grip upgraded

There's many a 158g 357 mag factory load out there that wont hit 1200 from a 4" revolver. Yes 1200 is solid power.

Probability the main reason the 9mm ar feels so much smoother than a camp 9 or hi-point (never owned the ruger) is you have a LOT more bolt mass and a much longer bolt travel before the plastic buffer comes into play.

What I like about this platform is I have the option of increasing bolt mass to allow for hotter loads to be used.

But probably best of all its an ar15 I can handload for that likes cheap cast bullets, that always comes home with 2x the brass it left with. Brass that never needs trimmed, lubed and only requires at most 6g of hs6!

The A1 Retro will probably get some much needed r&r between this 9mm and my 15/22
