Let's take a break from politics for a moment... To my knowledge, the 1 and only gun not on the ban list is the Red Ryder BB gun, but we all know that's subject to change as well due to its high capacity ammo feeding device! :cuss: My Grandkids are coming down next weekend and since they live so far away, I have to plan ahead on those rare visits. 1 is 3 and not as into guns yet, the other is 4 going on 5 in an 8 year old body and I've got some Red Ryders with their names on them. The old train of thought is, you start them shooting at something that reacts (pops, blows up, whatever) and you'll hook 'em. I need some ideas here for something cheap, easy, plus exciting! I'm pretty well stuck at balloons, but there's gotta be something better laying around. What have you done? Oh, I'm taking their Dad hog hunting as well, but he'll have to do on his own for excitement! No Red Ryders for him.

This may not be "High Road" to some folks, but I betcha started here if not with less!

A great cheap reactive target that's also delicious we like to use are saltine crackers.

When hit they break into pieces (with 22's) and all it takes is a 2x4 with a row of nails to make a stand for several.

Just hammer some finish nails in pairs a couple inches apart and place the cracker diagonally between em.

posted via that mobile app with the sig lines everyone complains about

Bag of animal crackers works as well. You get to shoot at all sorts of critters that way.
Cans on a string are good targets, boloons .

Use a paper puncher and hang playing cards on string, several in a row on a stick or something suspending them. They'll sway and twirl outside in the wind and keep things interesting. Every time you hit it, they'll react but they won't blow up like crackers so the targets can last for a while. You can work simply at hitting the cards at first, then start aiming for some of the features printed on the cards. Bonus points if you can hit it thickness-wise and split the card in two. I don't know if a BB can do that, but I used to practice a lot with an Anschutz .177 air rifle and would occasionally split cards with pellets. Very satisfying!

I've shot at those yucky candy Necco Wafers for years - but I really like the animal crackers suggestion from mnrivrat.

We had a shooting gallery when I was a little shooter. It was a cardboard box open on the front with layers of newspaper and corrugated for a back. We hung bottle caps from string and dad had put a 1x4 shelf across it about a third of the way up where lined up plastic army men or empty 12 g hulls. When it got too shot up we rebuilt it and salvaged a few handfulls of bb for reuse.
I like the cracker idea. The birds and squirrels would clean up around here.

Steel BBs are ricochet prone.Use some kind of a soft backstop and shoot soft targets like the aforementioned Saltine crackers, animal crackers, marshmallows.

I put a bicycle spoke across the opening of a 5 gal bucket, and hung a sheet metal mouse from the spoke. A straw on each side keeps it from shifting, and newspaper or packing foam in the bucket catches the BBs.

Challenging at 15 yards.

I made a plate rack by fastening hinges onto a 2x4 and then pine 1x4 blocks as the plates. I let my boy draw some deer and bears on the blocks. Drill a hole in the 2x4 so that you can use a big nail to hold the rack in place on the lawn.

Playing cards, gumballs, paintballs, sidewalk chalk cut into little discs, crackers, balloons, shatterblast discs, little green army men. potato chips, and cheapo *condoms.

*Condoms work better than balloons since they're thinner.

Uh, neighbor's dogs and cats crapping in the front yard, they really react to a BB hitting their backsides.

Please do us all a favor and should you decide to use condoms for the grandkids to shoot at... you must video their mother's reaction when she finds out. I'm sensing a youtube moment.:what::fire::cuss:
