I thought I would attend the gun show in Lexington, KY this morning. It's the annual post-Christmas show put on by RK/ Kenny Woods.

I went to the show, but I didn't attend. I actually thought there must be a used truck sale in the parking lot when I pulled up...until I walked all the way from my distant parking place to where I had a view of the entrance doors. This is what I saw:

For those of you not familiar with the venue, this is the Lexington Convention Center, which is part of the complex that contains Rupp Arena. The entrance door is at the far end of the building in this picture, and the line inside the building is probably 70 more yards + what you see here. I have been going to gun shows at this facility for 20+ years and this is completely unprecedented. The wait to get inside was estimated to be four hours!

People are panicking here in the red states. This is not a happy time in America.

It was worse than that at the show in Chantilly, Virginia, last weekend.

I wish politicians would realize that people are voting with their feet, and wallets.

For gun owners, talk of bans cuts to the bone. The anti-gunners are mostly unthinking and naive do-gooders, who would not be directly affected. Hence, the "enthusiasm gap" between the two sides.

Very well-spoken: "The anti-gunners are mostly unthinking and naive....".
Sorry, I don't know how to quote other's comments in the correct manner/style.

And such anti-gunners are not interested in learning any factual info within any correct context, or terminology which could allow them to distinguish fantasy from reality, or at least some of it.

I have been trying to put a quality black rifle on my credit card for weeks now, to no avail. My wife told me to buy one before the election and I told her I would wait until I could pay cash for one. As usual, she was right.

Facts are not on high priority with the gun grabber group. They relish misinformation. It's how they make their nut.

Is there any indication that these long gun show lines in the morning could get much shorter by February or so?
Or the many people who were never allowed entry in Dec-January will be back again?

Gunshow attendance is UNREAL and we haven't begun to see worst of it yet

Were they having a UK basketball game and a re-enactment of Villanova - Georgetown 1985 NCAA championship at the same time?

We have a minimum of another six months of this even if all the bills get shot down. If the bills don't passs and transfer of Semi-Autos gets banned but grandfathered it might peter out right quick but otherwise it's looking real bad. I'm not giving up and I'll it every poll and write my congressmen but start getting ready is all I can say. Sure sad I lost all those AK kits, AR-15 parts, CETME parts, and other semi-auto goodies in that tragic boating accident.

EXACTLY why i have quit going to gun shows. 30,000 panic driven people, in a 20,000 capacity building, spending over retail for normal everyday products. it takes 15 minutes to walk 15 yards. you can not see anything thru the gobs of people. if there is a deal there, which is highly unlikely, you would never know it because you could never get to it thru all the "lookers". if i need something when one of them is going, i go to the regular gun stores, and pay full retail, and do not have to get jabbed 17 times in the ribs trying to move 20 feet. gun shows used to be enjoyable. i could go to one place, and find many things that i would have to travel to several shops to see. put my hands on something i was interested in, that my local guy does not have, and may only be able to get via special order. i have bought several guns at them. but now you would think that either gun shows are the only place around to buy something, or that your going to be able to buy something for a great bargain price, which is no longer true. face it, if there are 10 people at any given moment looking at the same piece of hardware, is the price going to drop?! supply and demand. it has to be great for the dealers that choose to go. get rid of things that have been hanging around for some time, at way better prices than they could ever get at their shop. but it is a LOT of work also. and you have to be extremely sharp. way to easy for something to grow legs at a place like that. if and when we get a gun friendly government again, they might return to be a good place to go. but as long as the anti's are in power, they are going to be a terrible place for me.

I guess it just depends on who and where you are. I went to a gun show in Jacksonville, AR on Dec 30. No more crowded than usual, about 20-30 minutes to get in. I wasn't looking for an "assault" rifle, so didn't pay attention to the prices on them. Prices for what I was looking for -- a bolt action in .308 -- where all over the place, as usual, it just depending on the dealer. Saw a reasonably priced Winchester 70, and a couple of reasonably priced Ruger M77's. And an outrageously priced Saiga (not a bolt action, but I might have considered it if it had been more reasonably priced). I came home with a brand new Ruger GSR for just a bit over $800 (plus tax), which is as good as price as I've seen anywhere, and most dealers have no stock, so a good deal on a gun not in stock is no deal at all.

Biggest attendance on record for the New Year's weekend show here with similar lines. AR prices up $500 to $1,000 and flying out the door. People packed so tight you had to hold onto a table if you wanted to look at something.

Southaven MS gun show had lines longer than the one in your photo. As to whether the lines could be shorter by Feb...oh yeah, they could be much shorter. In fact, non-existent. Just read not five minutes ago how they want to have gun legislation voted on by the end of January. Possibly as early as Jan 15th. Do a news search online, I'm sure you'll find the stories.

It seems like that scene is just par for the course at my local gunshow going back several years.

Hopefully all of these people are writing their elected officials and joining the NRA, if they haven't done it already.

One of the things I noticed at the couple I went to since "the panic" started was lack of NRA/GOA presence. I mentioned this to promoter yesterday. Even a sign by the door saying "please write your congressmen bla, bla, bla" get the first time buyers, fudds, motivated to speak out.

Gun show sales reach record amidst control debate
ORLANDO, Fla. -

Nearly 8,000 people attended the first day of the Florida Gun Shows' exhibition this weekend in Orlando, according to event organizers.

Crowds broke records Saturday, and organizers said it's possible they'll see even larger numbers of gun enthusiasts before the weekend is over.

Gun buyers took vouchers that would allow them to return on Sunday, because some of them said it was difficult to get into Saturday's events.

Victor Bean is a promoter for Florida Gun Shows.

"[Gun enthusiasts are] buying and they're buying as fast as they can get them," said Bean. "We've had some exhibitors who had to cancel because they didn't have any inventory from their gun shops."

Organizers and gun owners said there's an overwhelming feeling that certain guns will not be available soon.

"They're afraid they'll lose their gun rights, their Second Amendment rights," said gun dealer Dan Derringer of Lakeland. "They want to get a gun and hopefully, they'll be grandfathered in. If Mr. Obama makes any changes, they'll be covered."

The rush to load up on guns and accessories comes just as the Obama administration is expected to unveil possible limitations, such as including a ban on assault rifles and the high-capacity clips allowing dozens of bullets to be fired in seconds.

Nationally, the Federal Bureau of Investigations has capped off a record month of a record year of background checks on potential gun buyers. According to FBI statistics, gun dealers ordered almost 2.8 million background checks in December.

In some states, buyers at gun shows are exempt from laws that require background checks to purchase a gun, but event organizers said at the Orlando gun show, checks are required.

Of course the media didn't do their proper due diligence and printed the gun show loophole propaganda.

And look at the first comment:

How many more children must die in order to satiate the right wing gun nuts?

The Second Amendment was targeted at a Militia and the world has changed – the Constitution is a relic that must also change… we’re no longer talking about muzzle-loading muskets.

It’s time for some common sense Federal gun legislation:

- No automatic or semi-automatic weapons (i.e. only manually operated actions allowed – e.g. bolt, pump or lever action)

- No external magazines or clips (these are too easily re-loaded)

- No speed strips or loaders

- No ammunition capacity greater than five rounds (give the poor deer a chance)

- No hollow-tip or +P ammunition (hollow-tips are banned by the Geneva Convention)

- No steel core ammunition (can penetrate Law Enforcement vests)

- No bi-metallic jacketed bullets (can start forest fires)

- No lead bullets (too harmful to the environment)

- No bayonet lugs

- No handgun capable of muzzle energy greater than 250 ft-lbs

- No rifle capable of muzzle energy greater than 750 ft-lbs

- No handgun with a barrel shorter than 5 inches

- No plastic or “polymer” framed firearms

- No rifle or shotgun with a barrel shorter than 18 inches

- No rifle or shotgun with a pistol style grip or retractable/folding stock

- No flash suppressors or threaded barrels

- 100% registration of all firearms (with serial number & ballistic print on file)

- A 10 business day waiting period on all firearm sales

- No concealed or open carry

- No sales of firearms or ammunition through the mail

- No sale or possession of more than 100 rounds of a particular cartridge type

- Gun locks required for firearm transport and in homes with minors under the age of 21

- Limit gun purchases to 1 per month

- A 75% sales tariff on all gun and ammunition sales

- All gun owners required to purchase mandatory liability insurance

- Federal annual permit required for all gun ownership... includes fingerprinting, photo and mental health evaluation

This would be a small step in the right direction. We must protect the children.

Luckily every response to this naive individual has been negative.

I was able to find a couple deals, a vendor selling gun cleaning supplies had a stock of PMags he was selling at MSRP but they weren't obvious so most people walked past. Picked up 4 window versions for $80. There was also a manufacturer, Tactical Weapons Solutions (TWS) selling their standard AR-15 "MOE" for list price, $1149. http://www.twsarms.com/product/ar15-rifle-moe-black/ Surprisingly they had stock and did not have a long line. Perhaps some of the hysteria is really calming, or everyone who wants on has theirs, at least around here. I didn't buy one, I already have mine ;)

gun show

Going to one this morning in San Antonio to help a dealer friend identify some militaria. He deals in NFA stuff mostly. Been out of lowers since before the election.
Should be interesting.

Its not just the gun shows; gun stores are also packed like I have never seen before. Where I live we don't have many gun stores, and one in particular is usually so empty that I have tried to give them business in fear that they would go under. The other day I dropped by the store and knew something was different since the parking area was full. Inside the store there were so many folks looking and buying that it seemed unreal. While I was there the owner marked two just received old M-1's at $1,000 and put them on the counter. Both sold within two minutes, one to an older guy who said he had always wanted one since his military days, and a young man who paid with a stack of $20 and $10 bills. Ammo for my handguns is still relatively available, but reloading supplies, especially primers, are nowhere to be found. We have a gun show coming up in a few weeks and I expect it to be a madhouse. There is no doubt that what is driving this is the fear that the government, both federal and state, are really serious about passing some severe gun control laws and what is now legal may become illegal in the near future.

Went to Bud's Gun Shop (the actual local store) yesterday evening in Lexington. My wife just wanted to shoot a rental Glock 27 to see whether she liked it.

It was 10 minutes until they closed, and the place was packed. There were lines of people waiting to be helped, and they were having people take a number as they came in the door. They were calling out numbers constantly.

The rifle wall had a trio of the Smith & Wesson dedicated .22 rifles that looked like ARs, and one AR15. It was a standard Ruger SR556. Price was well over $2000. (Looks like suggested retail on those is pretty high, but I was still pretty surprised.)

Some of the pallets that are usually stacked at least knee-high with cases of ammo were empty.

Interesting times.

Aaron

This is absurd. If there ever was a time to sit back and watch the circus, it is now. The more people act this way, the more we make the media's argument for them.

Also, who in their right mind would waste that much time in a day? If you were smart, you would have seen this coming and you get to stay home and surf the web, drink your favorite beverage and chuckle. I would bet a Benji most of those guys were tire kickers just whiling their day away. Stupid.
