I ordered some stuff from Brownells earlier this week.
I received a tracking code that the material had shipped,
I live in an area of the state that is serviced by the Bloomington and East Peoria terminals and UPS ALWAYS ships direct to those terminals from Davenport terminal.

Well, My tracker code informs me this shipment went to the Hogkins Illinois terminal located in good old Cook County!
It isn't scheduled to be delivered until Monday meaning they have up to two days to play with my package before delivering.

If they choose to open or even X ray the package they can figure out what weapons I have ordered parts for and not it is beyond the realm of possibility to share the information with someone from Cook County, perhaps even receiving corporate compensation for such services.

I know, get the tinfoil hat out but in this day and age I don't see anything Odd as being Odd, I see it as being suspect...
Just a heads up if you live in this state and order any goodies and have them shipped UPS, pay attention to your tracking information. HTH

Oh, I sent an e-mail to the Illinois State Rifle Association as well informing them of this rather odd event.

UPS is a business, if it does not make them money, they're probably not going to do it.. it was probably weather related.

The reason it is in Chicago is that Chicago is the "Mecca" for railroads in this country. If it is shipped by rail, it makes a stop in Chicago. They take those UPS trailers and put them on railcars. They are then fast-railed across the country. I love being called for UPS trains because I get home faster :D.

They don't just go around opening or X-raying domestic packages just like that.

Anything shipped in from abroad is subject to POSSIBLE customs inspection (though of the many I have ordered from abroad, so far none seem to have been tampered with)

Domestic packages however stay closed from origin to destination.

Historically, it was not at all uncommon for transcon freight to take longer to transit Greater Chicago than it did to cross the rest of the country combined... the New York Central and several other railroads got around this by building a jointly-owned "outer belt-line" to get around the municipally-owned Belt Railway of Chicago's indifference to customer needs.

Sounds like some things haven't really improved since the early 20th Century. LOL

Every shipment of ammo I've ordered from Sportsman's Guide for years has shipped UPS and passed through the UPS facility at Hodgkins, IL.

It's one of their major air freight hubs, this is nothing new.

I had a Mosin 91/30 that I sold to another FFL 03 and shipped UPS ground. Long story short the rifle disappeared at the sort facility in Chicago. Filed the loss with ATF and shocker two days later the buyer gets contacted by UPS that they found his package.

Hodkins is the UPS major Midwest Hub.

It's possible, with their fuel costs going through the roof, that they are ganging shipments together to control operating expenses.

FWIW, I've had all kinds of stuff, AR parts etc., shipped to me in Cook County. Ammo I have to use my Will County address for, but everything else goes to my office.

Never had a problem.

Update, package is still sitting in Cook County.
EVERY other time I have ordered, the packages are sent down truck freight.
From the time it ships 'til the time it hits my door is generally 24 hours.

This package left Montezuma on Wednesday and the weather has been quite nice in this region with dry passable roads.

That would be the last explanation I would ever come up with.

Your guess is that UPS is now illegally going through all customers boxes in order to help a county in IL execute a witch hunt against a group of law abiding citizens.

There is a difference between "possibility" and "probability"...I think you need to recalibrate and look at the issue again.

I'm not terribly concerned they would find anything evil, I just find it odd to ship to chicagoland what is going downstate when there are two BIG hubs right here where everything goes any other time I have ordered stuff but hey, nobody finds this weird, I'm not gonna worry about it.
I'm sure Chicago LE wouldn't consider tagging gun related shipments and identifying the receivers like they do with drug shipments and real illegal stuff.... Have a fine day.

Yeah dude...you are getting into supply chain logistics now...dont expect it to make sense from the outside.

Heck...i had to fly from Tn to CA last month and Delta wanted to fly me to Atlanta first, then back straight over TN to get to CA....how much sense does THAT make? None to me but some logistics nerd made it profitable for them so thats what they offered.

I seriously wouldn't worry about it a whole lot. Sometimes, routes are overburdened and it was logistically more feasable for UPS to go through their Hodgkins facility. It's one of the largest hubs they have (Louisville's the largest though).

I live in southern Illinois and UPS often ships through Hodgkins to me no matter where it's coming from. Sometimes stuff sits there for a few days. This is nothing to worry about.

UPS is not inspecting packages moving through Hodgkins to hand over to Cook Co authorities. That would cost them lots of money and time as well as losing them huge amounts of business if word ever got out.

We had some crazy routing on a UPS package we got today too. It was an order of vitamins. It's likely just weather related stuff.

It could also be that brownells has enough volume right now with all the panic buying that it is being sent by rail to a major metropolitan area first.

Never had an issue myself
