I live in New Jersey (I know, I should move, but given that moving is not an option) and I just discovered that some geniuses in the State Assembly are trying to pass a 5 round limit on pistol magazines (AB 3664).

Based on a quick perusal of the internet, it looks to me like there is no such thing as a 5 round magazine for most pistols and thus, this would act as a de facto ban on all semi auto pistols.

Does anyone know if anyone anywhere is making 5 round pistol magazines? I would greatly appreciate any info you could provide to help me fight this last assault on the battered, bruised and beaten Liberty of the people of New Jersey.

Might cap an regular mag to 5 shot. If I was in your shoes (which I am luckily not) I would get 1911 in limited mag cap or just switch or revolver. Given that this ridiculous bill passes. It surprises me why Americans send folks to govern. I have noticed this Obama wagon has gun control agenda as one of their top priorities. Too bad. It may have trickle down effect in the entire world.

Saddly, NJ has very perverse laws regarding "defacing guns". This law appears to be written in such a way that altering mags might well violate that provision.

If it were to pass, I am thinking a S&W .357. That said, I am hoping it will not come to that

Now I see that Senator Feinstein has introduced a bill to ban Mini 14s. My Mini 14 is the only firearm I own that takes a 5 round mag.

Last time I checked, most wheel guns hold 6 rounds; does this also cover them? Are you supposed to put plugs in an 8 round S & W?

Ridiculous

the standard XDs .45 mags are 5 round mags also. But traditionally, most manufacturers do not make low capacity mags for anything other than pocket guns.

Hmm. I guess I could carry around my S&W Model 52, those mags only hold 5 rounds. Wouldn't be too confident in the powderpuff wadcutter loads it prefers for stopping power though. It'd be really big for carry, too...

Push comes to shove, I'll use one of several five round revolvers and/or my 870 shotgun. The 870 has a 20" barrel and holds five in the magazine. Not a scientific test by any standard, but if its effect on a human target is similar to what it is on a large Black Diamond watermelon the fight will be over very quickly.

If significant demand for 5 round magazines become a reality, they'll be available by the ton. That's Economics 101 supply and demand, and if and when the demand spikes, so will the supply on a slightly delayed basis.

A complete ban on handguns is unconstitutional. So just make a law saying that handguns can only carry five rounds. That is more or less a ban anyways and makes owning a handgun almost useless.

Google didn't show any specifics just they wanted to lower capacity. Course you would know more than I.

I don't think I'd put up with the girth of a double stack semi auto for 5rds.

I thought one of the hallmarks of the Supreme Court decision was to affirm that individuals have a constitutional right to own firearms that are "in common usage". Five round semi-automatics are not in common usage. New Jersey simply seems to be in a frenzy to keep up with and exceed their larger neighbor. Political inferiority complex that has nothing to do with anything except deliberately sticking a sharp stick into the eye of many thousands of law abiding and tax paying citizens. The working man in New Jersey need to realize the Democrats are not his friends if he values liberty.

Kahr PM45 (CM45 coming out soon... cheaper option)
Springfield XDs .45

If legislation is passed, manufacturers will likely adapt.

Before it's all settled, the Supreme Court will have their say.

Same thing just happened in NY with the 7 round limit. It's imperitive to become politically active in times like this. Don't doubt for a second that it can be passed in states like these. That said, if they want to limit things to 5 shots, your best trade-off is a S&W 500 magnum with a 2" barrel. You might not hit your attacker, but he won't be able to see or hear anything after the second shot.

Quincy, check out my poll in the revolver thread "5 or 6?" The majority of people who carry revolvers carry a j-frame or similar, which is a 5-shot revolver. Also, these bans usually don't apply to internal magazines.

The only things I can think of are weapons like a sub-compact 1911 (commander or officer, whatever it is) or a similar single-stack .45 ACP (like the XDs).

Even an Officers framed 1911 holds at least 6 rounds (most ship with 7 rounders), wouldn't qualify.

I'll be interested to see how magazine makers respond to this and NYs 7 round law if in fact they do become law.

My guess? Fixed 7-round mags that still fit a full-sized magwell.

I see no reason why that wouldn't work.

Threads like this really annoy me. Are you just sitting back waiting for them to take your rights away and looking for options or are you doing something about it? Writing your reps, your Gov.....contributing to the NRA-ILA?

You can move too. I know I would if I lived in such a backward thinking State. All of these would be my first options before searching for 5 round pistol magazines.
