Hello all-

I was just listening to the Gun Guy Radio podcast that was dealing with Cowboy Action Shooting. It covered the new Wild Bunch matches and what guns you could use and it got me thinking, are there any competitions that allow the use of any gun manufactured between 1895-1930? If not, why not set it up like a Wild Bunch match with an expanded weapons selection, like Colt New Services, Webleys, S&W Model 10's, etc.

Have any of you had that fantasy shooting competition that you would love to see done, but haven't yet? This is just a purely fun, hypothetical topic

Thanks everyone!

I'd like to see a WWII three gun match. Maybe leave the shotguns out since there weren't a whole lot used.

I like the idea of the WWII 3 gun match! Maybe replace the shotgun portion with a scoped rifle portion or carbine portion if that was possible. I would love to see someone doing 3 gun with a Luger, M1 Carbine and Mauser 98k. I think that would be awesome and a lot of fun!

There was one here in Texas last year, I believe it was the Texas Multi-Gun (sponsored by Larue) match. It wasn't all WWII, but there were divisions for it. I know there were many who shot M1 Garands, GI 1911s, and M1897 shotguns.

This year is going to be Vietnam-themed; again, with classes for those using equipment from the era.

How about 3 gun with guns that cost less than $300 each?
That would be a pretty short list, right now. People are asking $1000 for $300 semiauto rifles currently and very few decent center fire pistols to choose from at that price.

Not sure of the interest level myself.

Personally I'd like to see something a little "action oriented" with .22's. Basically something like USPSA but with paper targets only. No more than 20 rounds per stage. "Rimfire Action Shooting" or the like. No steel so no power factor to worry about. Break it into 3 divisions - Production, Modified - Iron, and Modified - Open. 10-round magazine limits for all divisions (as realistically few .22's take more than that anyways). Production division would be for nearly stock guns of standard type (ie, most "regular" guns under $500 or so).

I think it would be an interesting little game that would be cheap to compete in when ammo prices are at normal levels.

Mgmorden, it's not quite what you want, but look at Ruger Rimfire Challenge (Now run by the NSSF). It's basically steal challenge with 22s, 10 round limit, Open/Limited/Manual/Cowboy divisions. Lots of fun and people show up with all different skill levels, Masters to brand new shooters.

No Ruger Rimfire matches around here, but I already shoot Steel Challenge (which is pretty active in this area) with my .22. I just would like something a little more "action" oriented. IE, not set stages, and shooting/reloads on the move. I love Steel Challenge (its kinda what put me on this thought train), I just think it would be a bit of fun to mix the fun I have with rimfire there with the fun of a full USPSA match :).

Fair enough. For what it's worth, one of the local USPSA clubs here has an occasional rimfire day, as does another larger club farther south. I too wish there was a national organization for these things.

I'm on board with this idea. I've thought about it for some time. We had a league shoot here that allowed us to compete with the center fires. When there was enough interest, they began a rimfire division.

How about...

(Disclaimer- I have never done three gun or anything like that, but I do have some experience in N-SSA type timed/scored target competition)

Something that challenges shooters to compete with firearms not traditionally associated with dynamic (combat) situations. This is taking the idea of 'beware the man with only one gun' idea to a new level.

For example, a guy (me) comes with three weapons- a Browning BAR (no, not the 'real' BAR- the hunting rifle by FN), a Browning Gold Hunter in 12 Ga., and (I'm spitballing since I don't own a handgun...yet) and some older civy-market handgun, semiauto or otherwise.

Or, maybe to go back even further in the evolutionary chain, competing with a Winchester M70, a Remington Model 12, and an old S&W/Colt (or somesuch- I'll pay penance to the handgun gods later... )

I think we could create quite the challenge for some people by having them use, well, more "benign" tools. Adapt something not optimized for combat by just doing with what you have. You get what I mean?

I like that idea riflespeaks! Sort of like using your garden variety rifles, shotguns and pistols and maybe have the competition in a SHTF sort of setup?

For instance, the scenario starts with you waking up to a civil unrest scenario with some looters in your "home". You actually clear something like a shoot house with your pistol to get to your rifle and shotgun. Was that what you had in mind?

Meant to add, you would be using pistols like your old S&W Model 10, Remington 7400 rifle, and perhaps an 870 or a Mossberg 500

ryan- yeah, something like that. It doesn't even necessarily have to be a SHTF scenario, but it-

a: gives people with a competitive spirit and basic equipment a venue to explore.

b: shows people you can be effective with ANYTHING in any scenario with sufficient application of fundementals and skill, with a lot of emphasis on skill.

There's a Zootshooters group here that has some crossover from the 3-gun and Cowboy Action groups.
