Legally, is there any reason I couldn't/shouldn't OC in OR?

I'm doing my first backpacking trip into cougar country in Oregon. IIRC this is an OC friendly state. Is there any reason I shouldn't OC my 10mm on my trip? It is OC without a permit, yes?

According to my 2010 copy of Traveler's Guide to the Firearms Laws of the Fifty States, Oregon open carry is unrestricted under state law; some local regulation may exist.

As long as you are outside of Portland and perhaps a few other large metro areas you should be fine.

Also, with respect to vehicle carry: loaded firearms must be carried in plain view or securely encased in the trunk or storage compartment.

Oregon is a "shall issue" state for concealed carry permits. With a permit you are exempt from local carry laws and don't need to worry. Unlike other states, you don't get arrested for "being made" while carrying concealed here, either.

The wife and I spent several days and nights in Oregon last August, driving there from Arkansas, and then returning to Arkansas via California and the SW. I kept the guns safely locked away while in Oregon, because I knew I'd need to do that for California anyway. We spent about half the time away away from the metro areas, in Eastern Oregon, and along the coast. I don't think I would have felt out of place OC in Eastern Oregon. But the coast is a bit touristy, and I don't know how OC would have played there. I spent the weekend in suburbs of Portland, and wasn't about to tempt fate with OC there.

Open carry is legal where I live, but except for a few hunters, I've never seen it and don't do it myself. Too many Maryland and Northern Virginia blissninny transplants around.

Check with other forums on OC and CCW as there are more towns/cities with OC restrictions than just Portland, Newport for example is one.

BTW, I live in OR.

There is also no legal reason why you cannot walk up to a ex Navy Seal and tell him he is a candy ass and a wimp. Perfectly legal.

Thanks all. I'll be poking my state senator and reps (They're antis, so my pokes will probably be circular filed) but I'll be OCing in cougar country. (mm, delicious delicious 10mm goodness.)

OC is allowed by state law, but OC of a loaded firearm is prohibited in Portland, Beaverton, and a number of other cities. You are exempt from the city prohibitions if you have an OR CHL. Since you live in Oregon, get one.

So, you equate lawful, un-camouflaged exercise of a Constitutional Right to being a rude provocateur of social discourse?

I think I see the problem here....
