I got kinda lucky yesterday.
I found some of this
IMR-Trail-Boss-Smokeless-Powder.jpg
and some of these
222789.jpg (100gn plinker bullets)

I am looking to use them to work up a low power, "grouse" load for my .308, for those days I go out for deer and only see squirrels and bunnies. Can anyone recommend a starting point?

Is it legal to use centerfire rifles on grouse in NY? I know it's not here in Wisconsin, altho probably half the shots one hears after opening day of deer season is probably at them.

I've shot them with unique, just don't try to drive them too fast. Fun, almost accurate.

As far as I know. IIRC, pheasant and turkey require shotgun, but grouse are subject to the same regs as other small game. Plus, "grouse load" is a general term(coined by Townsend Whelen, IIRC) for a low power load for a centerfire rifle, to use on small game without destroying them.

How much bird is left after a hit with a 110, 30 grain bullet??? or do you stone and sandblast them like barking a squirrel?
Should be plenty, as long as the power is kept low enough. I figure about 1000 fps would put it somewhere between .22lr and .22wmr as far as energy.

The biggest problem is sighting in your rifle for this load and then having a big NY deer walk in front of you when you want to kill it with a deer ammo round.

Fill the case to 100% load density. Expect in the neighborhood of 1200 FPS.

there's trail boss data available at Hodgdon's site but the universal TB formula from Hodgdon is take 100% load density to base of bullet only, do not compress Trail Boss, weigh it, multiply by .7, somewhere between 70% and 100% load density you will find accuracy....they all shoot like a powderpuff, iirc I was using 10g in my 30-06 under a 185gc lead bullet that stayed subsonic and was quite accurate out of my rifle.....
