My wife and I are going to New Mexico to hunt elk. While I hunt she stays in a motel room and sews quilts.
N.M. does not recognize Ky. CCW:cuss: I have looked at HandgunlawUs. and am still a bit unsure regarding the legality of having a pistol in our motel room especially if the motel has a gun buster sign. Please help. Thanks ahead of time!

According to page 5 of this link (which cites the relevant NM statute), "No Guns" signs carry the force of law in NM:

http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/newmexico.pdf

My advice would be to find a hotel/motel that has no such posting.

Thanks RetiredUSNChief.
I just called the hotel and they do not have a sign so it is my assumption that my wife can legally have a hand gun in the room even though our permits are not accepted. If anyone has any additional thoughts please advise. Thanks!

Your assumption is correct.

She just can't carry it concealed. And whatever the transportation laws are for NM apply when traveling with a gun in the car, don't forget.

I got an AZ permit to be able to carry in NV, and while I was waiting......NV dropped AZ. (NV has effectively dropped all tourist carry.) But it added KS and NM as well. Then KS accepted UT. So.....I have to find a reason to visit NM in the next 5 years. :)

Look at handgunlaw.us for the specific rules.

In general:

- Your vehicle is treated like your house. You can have a gun open, concealed, whatever.

- Open carry is allowed and not unusual. Make sure you know which areas are restricted (not too many).

- No guns allowed signs carry force of law, but I see very few.

Welcome to NM!

As a long-time resident of NM, I will second what "Somewhere" posted above.

I will extended what he said to point out that
1) No permit is needed to concealed-carry an unloaded weapon
2) "your vehicle" is not limited to a car. Bicycles, motorcycles, horses, etc. are covered as well.

Good luck hunting. I've taken a couple cow elk in unit 2b, and have seen many, many large bulls taken in the same place. Where will you be hunting?

No Worries

In New Mexico you may have your gun in your hotel/motel room with out any problems. Also you may have a loaded gun in your glove box while driving your car/truck. Open carry is ok here.
Welcome to the Land of Enchantment.

Another possibility to consider :

You could get a VA non-resident CPL which is honored in NM. It is $100, good for 5 years, and rather simple.

I was able to get one entirely through the mail and even used my US military Honorable Discharge (DD214) as proof of handgun training.
