It might be a silly, Dummkopf question, but this notion came from the constant impressions that everybody attends their first CCW class only with the planned carry gun, which certainly makes sense. The state is TN.

My only handgun is the Sauer 38H, to be used only for the class, but the next will be a Sig 230 or 232.
Whether the Sig will be carried or just left in the car won't be decided for months after the class.

Some states do, most do not. (not sure of TN)..

Heck TX just got rid of our Revolver Only or Semi-Auto and Revolver requirements. (Previously if you qualified with a revolver thats all you could carry)

Although there was never any specifics other than NSA or SA on your license..

Ask the instructor or check TN's state gov't web site, the info should be on there somewhere. You can check here - http://www.handgunlaw.us/ - also, there's some other state by state CC info sites out there also, google is your friend.

I don't know Tennessee's rules either, but if it is like Texas take whatever centerfire gun you can shoot well for your concealed carry class. When you get your carry gun of choice, practice with that.

One point though, make sure the gun you take to qualify at the class runs well and with runs well with the ammo you take along. Quality FMJ is usually a sure thing in a semi-auto.

I say this because on my first carry license class one of the people showed up with a nice classic 50 or 60 year old 1911. The only problem was it was a jammer on the shooting line. It delayed the class' group shoot and an instructor gave assistance more than once to clear the gun. Was it the gun, ammo, or the person? Hard to say, just make sure your gun runs before you go.

Post like this are a reminder of how good my state is and how bad others have it.
Same here! I've got some friends back in IL who are working on getting their CCW there. Talk about bad!

didn't know that. That's great!

Forcing Americans to have a license only for a specific gun is a why to erect barriers to the exercise of our Second Amendment rights.

Illinois tried it and thankfully there were enough sane politicians in the legislature that voted it down.

I live 5 miles from TN in MS. MS does not and I am pretty sure TN does not. I know a lot of TN CCW holders and none have ever mentioned it

Here in nc there is no requirement of that type when you pass the mandatory class and receive your concealed license you can carry any revolver or pistol you want as long as its concealed. But your in tennessee best thing i would do is go to your gun store or concealed carry expert and ask.

Thanks very much.
The WW2 Sauer 38H trigger is so nice, and feels just like its offspring, the Sig 230/232 (almost identical).

The few misfeeds in the Sauer (approx. 100 rds.) seem to be from not firmly knocking the magazine the last one/two millimeters into the handle.

Tennessee has no such requirement. And at my class, you certainly could use your own gun, but guns and ammo (Ruger .22s) were provided. No sense in burning up my own. :p

Nevada does do this, and possibly others. There (at least when I was in Las Vegas from 2003-05) you have to register and list each gun and qualify with it. There was no limit on how many you could have.

Indiana doesn't care either. I paid my money, got printed, and carry whatever handgun i want. I like that very much.

TN doesn't care what you carry as long as it's considered a pistol and you have a HCP.

Listing a gun on your permit is tantamount to registration and we don't do that in Free America.

Negative. I have gone through the course a few times (once took a friend, it was free and you never know what you will learn). It is recommended (or suggested I should say)that for liability reasons you qualify with your carry weapon. This shows proficiency with said firearm. It should eliminate any questions a prosecutor may have regarding the weapon you used in a shooting event.
There is a local range that allows you to do the shooting portion of the exam (for a fee assuming you have your hcp)with a different pistol if you are so inclined.
If you want any info, just pm me. Love the Mid South!!

Interesting. Here in Texas no record is kept of what gun a person qualifies with. In the past all you had to do is pick a semi-auto and you were covered for everything regarding handguns. The brand and type didn't matter.

Now I guess an applicant can use a revolver too and be covered for all handguns, which is something I have not heard until now. Seems reasonable.

chicharones: That's good planning, without a doubt. The gun is pretty reliable when the magazine is fully seated, and ammo is/will be fresh "Geco" (by RUAG ) 7,65 Browning, in the red/black boxes.

It's so ironic that the local range in Bartlett TN (where I will take the class) has one rental Sig 232 (my objective), and over four phone call in nine months, the Sig is reported as "broken" or "waiting for a part", each and every time.:(

This is the Only gun I've really wanted to rent, but is Always broken. Does this seem fishy, or do such sequences of coincidences happen with popular rental guns?:scrutiny:
