30-06... Looking for Recommendations

Belive the hype, get a 30-06!

My current and only 30-06 is a Remington 700 Mountain Rifle (made in the late 80's) that I picked up a couple years ago for $400 I bought a used Leupold 3-9x40 VX-2 for $200 and bought new bases and rings for about $30.00. It is accurate and shoots as well as any of the other 30-06 rifles I have owned:
M1 Garand
Savage 110
Browning 1895
CZ 550 FS

I have a current model Winchester 70 Featherweight 22-250. I like it well enough to buy one in 30-06. As well, I have a Kimber 84m Longmaster classic 223 that I really like; I would dearly love to have an 84L Classic 30-06.

Topher, how old is the Rem 700 you are looking at? I've not heard great things about QC in Ilion lately. On the other hand, most everyone seems to love Tikka rifles.

Valmet Hunter in .30-06. What could be better than a Finnish AK-47 in .30-06?

There's also the Saiga .30-06, complete with "Shamu the Whale" plastic bodywork, but I'd be afraid people would laugh at it at the range.

For a bolt action, it's still hard to beat the Savage 110.

Love these threads. I own Ruger, Remington and CZ. They all work fine. Most are blue and walnut. Chambered for our beloved workhorse, the 30-06. CZ was the one that surprised me. It shot tiny groups, has a single set trigger, and is gorgeous. The rifle is a CZ550 american, and it belongs to my wife. No tinkering, no tuning. Nothing. Add scope, and sling. I like em all. But the CZ.... it turned my head.

You do realize the ProStaff line is the bottom of Nikon's line up?

Thanks, Gtscotty. Just started handloading this winter, I'm excited for it to warm up so I can find what she really likes. (Yeah, my rifle is a she.)

It's going to be at the top of your budget, but the Savage 114 in .30-06 with a Leupold or Redfield Revolution would be a good fit to what you want. 22" barrel, 1-10 twist, blued/wood. The 110 Trophy Hunter would also fit, for about $100 less, and includes a Nikon scope. The scope is one I'm not familiar with though.

The Prostaff 5 is a completely different beast. About the only thing it has in common with the plain prostaff is the name. The 5 is a step under the Monarch in the Nikon hierarchy.

Keeping the name and just "upgrading" the Prostaff to the Prostaff 5 was a bad marketing move on Nikon's part.

Win. mod. 70 fwts. can be had new, at least in my neck of the woods for $779. I don't think you can possibly go wrong with that or for <> $100, the Ruger Hawkeye. I have the Hawkeye in A/W stainless and it is a really trim well-balanced rifle. I've also got a FN fwt.(S.C.) and I would really hate to have to choose if I could only keep one.

Older vintage Remington 700. The early ones with blued stainless steel barrels are especially nice.

Like already said, the ProStaff 5 is a different line than the ProStaff.

Also, the OP said it's not going to be a heavily used gun and mostly for sitting in a stand. There is no reason to spend more than $300 on a scope for that usage IMO. Nikon scopes and especially the new ProStaff 5 are very good scopes and worth more than the cost, again IMO. We are talking a tree stand hunting rifle for no more than 200 yards not a benchrest or competition rifle.
