Well, it carries so easy, 20 ounce unloaded weight, but easier to shoot than 12 or 13 ounce alternatives. It makes lots of energy with a 140 grain JHP, is quite accurate with the load, and I didn't buy it to make YOU happy.

Perspective plays a big role
I still mostly carry a Taurus 85 in 38sp. I am just really comfortable with it and it is surprisingly accurate. I have carried a Kahr K40 and a Glock 19 but always go back to the 85.
To the OP, the latest ballistics tests on 38 out of a snubbie are a bit concerning only because technology has not moved them forward comparable to the new 40 and 357Sig and the revolution in 9mm.
I put big ole wadcutters in mine.
That being said, I have a stainless 85 in .327 federal that gives me the extra bullet and a little more speed but I have never fielded it. It just gets fed 32 longs when my wife goes to the range with me.

Out here in the woods, you'd probably want a shot load in one barrel. I shot two cottonmouths last week within 3 days. One I used my .38 pocket snubby on with a carry load, 158 grain +P JHP, and the snake was crawling off. The other, well, I had my 20 gauge SxS on me. His head got obliterated.
I also wear snake boots as a matter of routine.

two smalls beat one large for CC IMHO, large guns are sidearms for OC but round and round it goes or so it seems.

This is one big plus for revolver carry in the sticks. My wife and I routinely load our revolvers with snake shot for the first round when we're camping and hiking.

Those tests probably did not account for low temperature. My own test only happened along that issue by accident.

I chrono'ed the Speer 135gr GDHP SB round last weekend to compare it to Remingtons new 125 +P short barrel round. I was very surprised to see the GDHP averaging 860 fps, and the Remington 909 fps. This was from a 2" model 64. Both rounds were accurate, and easily controllable, and I thing either would get the job done for self defense.

I don't know that I totally agree with some of this. I reload for my snubbies, and a +P load with a 125 gr. Gold Dot or XTP, runs across the chrony at better than 1200 fps..
7.0 grs. of Longshot @ 1200+ fps consistently expands and penetrates through and through 16" of tightly rolled up water soaked denim. In fact, I place the water soaked, tightly rolled up denim held together by bailing wire, then place it in a card board box lined with a trash bag, then filled with water. The projectiles pass completely through and leave a very good wound channel. When recovered, the bullets consistently mushroom from .600" to as much as .725", and are fully intact when fired from a 2-1/2' revolver.
.357 mag. is another story. I run H110 / 296 loads. 158 gr. Gold Dots and XTP's from a 2-1/2" revolver are achieving no less than 1250 fps, and penetration is through and through. 158' expansion averages about the same as the .38 spcl. +P 125's. The .357 mag. H110 loads with 125 gr. JHP's are on the edge of 1400 fps., and although penetration is still completely through 16" of denim, expansion is almost all the way to the bottom of the bullet shank, pedaled down past the base. There is some fragmentation, but not a lot with either XTP or Gold Dot.
The factory self defense +P 38 spl. offerings haven't really impressed me. I've run some of the rather expensive stuff, Gold Dots and Hydra Shock 125's across the chrony, and velocity has been a disappointing upper 900's to an occasional 1050 fps. from a 2-1/2" barrel.

Gamestalker, The water soaked denim may not be a very good measure. May I recommend four layers of dry denim in front of water filled milk jugs? It doesn't give as accurate a representation of penetration as gelatin does, and it is a best case scenario for expansion, but it's close. Remember that to get a failure I had to shoot the Gold Dot short barrel load from a cold 2" revolver.
I own a Model 36 (no Dash) Chiefs Special, the little revolver is somewhat of a classic in that it's all steel, early run and shoi;dn;t have +P's in it. I have no intemtions of loostening this revolver up!
I shoot plain old 158 gr bullets or Speer XTP 125 gr ammo whenever I have it. The Speer really shoots hard and would most likely preform as touted.
Yes there are only 5 shots, from a relatively heavy little revolver to carry all day, but my main attracton to the revolver is that it's small and powerfull for it's size.
I hope I'll never need it but life has taught me that sometimes you really do need to aim for Center mass especally when you really wish you were somewhere else! It stays with you forever!
The best thing to do is get away if possible, if not, turn and fight,mad dog violently! Have the best factory ammo that you can buy for the task!

Well, I should hope so. Taurus' alloy M85 was rated for +P in 1996 when I bought mine. I do believe the 642 is +P rated. Not real sure about ALL the Smiths, but probably so and FOR SURE the steel ones. Hell, you can buy a steel J frame in.357 Magnum!
The Taurus was the first alloy gun I saw with a +P designation and that little fart still rides in my right pocket after all these years, still accurate and reliable and tight and timed well.

Some day I'll get thrown off of here for promoting the m36 Chief. I love that iconic Jframe!!!
As to loads - practice all day with standard loads and carry =P! You will not cause any undue wear with the +P unless you are shooting dozens of bad guys per week. If you are shooting dozens of bad guys per week you need to go full auto.
