I am not sure if this is the best place, but the rifle used in the attack on the Canadian Parliament was a Winchester Model 94, .30-30 caliber. Already some American and Canadian commentators are calling for a ban on this and similar "high capacity assault rifles." Some witnesses apparently thought it was a double barrel shotgun because of the appearance of the barrel and magazine.

So much for those hunters who really believe the lie that "we don't want to ban your hunting rifles." Well, they do.

Huh.

Well all be. Hope they don't come after the cowboy style leverguns for CAS shooting. Those are my favorites.

Next thing ya know they will be after high capacity break action guns. High capacity and assault rifle are made up terms that we have to deal with, but a winchester 94 is a far cry from high capacity and it's a hundred years past being an assault rifle.

When I saw the photos of the perp and weapon used definitely raised an eyebrow and has be curious as to how the media ---- storm plays out on this one.

I've long regarded the lever action 30-30 and a pump action centerfire as the most under appreciated centerfire rifles for defensive or offensive purposes. With proper training and practice, they lose very little to semi-autos.

Quite frankly, if they couldn't ban the AR-15 after Sandy Hook, the lever action .30-30 stands ZERO chance of getting banned in the states. Canada, however, is another story. Watch this closely on both sides of the border to see how this plays out.

Using a rifle without an extended magazine, bayonet lug and pistol grip, what was that terrorist thinking?

And I thought it had to be black to be scary.

My dad gave me a Model 94 for my 16th B-day, more than 30 years ago. Hasn't went on a rampage and killed anybody yet. Go figure.

What a coincidence, niether has my AK, or any other firearm that I, or anybody else that I know, owns or has owned.
These talking points don't fit the agenda. Remember to vote on Nov 4th. We need to take this country back soon before its too late.

Strangely, the lever-action rife WAS the assault rifle of it's day.

During the civil war, the south call the Henry Rifle that 'Damn Yankee rifle you load on Sunday and shoot all week'.

Think about now.
They hold 7-8 rounds of powerful .30 cal rifle ammo.
And you can re-load the mag on the fly without breaking stride.

A good man with a 30-30 lever-gun and a pocket full of ammo would be a very dangerous opponent!

Regardless of what modern wonder-weapon you are fighting him with.

Most of us know it's the nut behind the trigger not the trigger. I think a great many ignorant, and I use that term as it should be used as uneducated, truly believe that one arm is deadlier than the next just because of the weapon. The reality is a trained, dedicated foe is scary and deadly with damn near anything. An average unarmed special operations member in jeans and a t shirt is a HUGE threat should they decide to be armed or not. The sooner we all stop focusing on the tools of mayhem and start focusing on the traits of those who would bring about mayhem the better we will ALL be.

The .30-30 model 1894 Winchester holds 6 rounds in the magazine.
That's a "high cap assault rifle?'
OK then, an eviler rifle was the 1873 Winchester carbine as it held 10 rounds in the magazine.
I'm sorry about what happened in Canada.
Someday the gun control nuts will accidently stumble upon the fact that any repeater or semi auto can be used to kill a number of people and disrupt and even terrorize a community.
The they will discover that a flintlock musket can actually be REloaded .....

[/sarcasm]

I believe the official handgun of the RCMP is the S&W 5946. If so, that is what the Sgt At Arms most likely would have been using.
Thanks, StrawHat, that's pretty consistent with the pictures I've seen on the news where he was totin' a stainless autoloader, reportedly a 9mm.

Yeah I kept reading that it was a double barrel shotgun...then I saw a picture and thought  that's a lever action.

Then the old "journalist guide to firearm identification" came to mind.

I am already reading articles with "experts" saying they are surprised he didn't use an AK-47 or M16 where he could have fired 500 rounds in a minute, as long as he could reload fast enough....

They failed to mention, as long as he was able to carry 500 rounds of ammo...and five 100 round drum magazines that didn't jam.

I'm guessing that the various authorities in the western world are just beginning to come to grips with these "lone wolf" types - however they're armed. Calling them "recent converts to Islam" doesn't fit what we're actually seeing.... Most seem to be seriously troubled individuals (many with previous heavy criminal histories) that seem to have joined the "biggest gang around".

No matter what they're armed with - these are very dangerous individuals. Now we need to figure out how to identify potentials both in prison and as they leave prison, then track them on a daily basis. I'm quite serious about this but wonder if we're up to it.

Maybe I'm foolish, but every time I read about such events I ask myself what would have happened if those who were being shot at were properly armed and well trained?

In the end each is responsible for his own safety.

So, the terrorist was using a manual action rifle that could only fire one round per pull of hte trigger, and the SA was carrying a double action double stack hi cap stainless auto pistol with no safeties?

Spin. Demonize the perp but don't put credit where the pro gun side can use it. What killed the perp is exactly what the antigunners want to ban, too, so focus the argument on what the terrorist used, regardless of how silly it seems to us. Non gunners don't get it anyway, they only hear the message of outrage and nod in agreement.
