Shocked by anti-gun comments

Sometimes its best to just be silent, but still take in and reflect upon whats said. I've learned that for many people you're just not going to change their mind.

Strange that you'd hear that much anti-gun stuff in Nashville of all places though.

Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor, especially if you want to stay employed.

Everyone has an opinion. Some people just plain don't like firearms.

I keep my political opinions to myself when I'm at work. I'm too busy working to solve the World's problems. Plenty of time to do that on my own time.

What's an Uber?
658,602 people live in Nashville. How many of 'em do you think are shooters never mind carry a firearm? Considering only about 498,000 in the whole State carry.

Think of the demographic of people who are all about Uber.... most are part of the "hipster" type. Uber is kinda like the Instagram of the Taxi world. Or you will get a lot of the Granola Crunching Tree People type too. Young people do Uber who get their info from Twitter and don't own a car.

Don't mean to offend, I'm just generalizing as a fellow Young Person who hates my generation.

Edit: Also, it's Nashville. It might be in TN, but it is still a big city. I interviewed at a school there for my doctorate last year and after mingling, I saw how it is still a very "young urban" attitude amongst the people there.

I would avoid political discussions with your customers as they are likely to give you a poor rating if you anger them.

I largely agree with the above post #7, and I am... well face it, an Old Fuff.

If the Uber driver was to discuss other political issues (which is something I wouldn't recommend) with his riders I suspect he'd find most of them to be young adults, who are slanted toward Urban/Liberal beliefs. This group is generally uncomfortable with guns and people who own them. They're attitudes have been formed through a combination of media propaganda and a total lack of actual experience with the issue. Anything the visiting NRA and its members might do or say is unlikely to change any opinions. Sad but true.

Jeeper's on point. I'm betting the demographics of uber users tend to be young and left.

I'm only 36 and didn't know what uber was until a couple weeks ago.

Uber is an independent contractor taxi service. Drivers use their own vehicles to pick up riders through a coordinated app and payment system through cell phones. The good thing about that kind of job is being armed is never an issue with management.

Another thing that Uber riders tend to be is from somewhere else...or local hippies.

All state capitols are full of dummies. The state house dome draws them like a magnet.

Be happy you're not in Boston. Subtle and not-so-subtle anti-gun propaganda everywhere.
I saw more outright violence there in a week than I see in a year down here.

With the mostly young Vanderbilt Univ. crowd and the various people who make money from there, most probably let CNN tell them what and how to think.

Going into the Barnes & Noble Books by campus gives one very quick insight about general attitudes.

I've used Uber a number of times since it's usually less expensive than a taxi in larger cities, it's faster, and certainly it's cleaner. My take is that virtually all Uber drivers are quite young and therefore most likely more liberal. I don't talk to the drivers much except about the weather.

It wasn't that long ago that the Dixie Chicks were at the top of the country music world. They had the not so great idea to rip President Bush during a concert in England. I'm not sure there's a measurement of time to describe how fast they became pariahs in the country music world, who's fans tend to lean towards the conservative side. Lesson learned. I have many left leaning customers. I let them rant against guns, etc. as much as they want, as I won't lose business because I wanted to win a political debate. Keeping quiet is the right thing to do.

If they had any sense they'd ask you for your recommendation for good BBQ, and keep their traps shut when talking about guns.

Not at all. While TN is a red state, Nashville would be very happy to be Chicago.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you at a certain level. They are told what to 'feel', not what to think. When was the last time you heard someone of the CNN variety tell you what they "THINK"? NO, it's almost always "I FEEL guns are bad" "I FEEL the war is bad.. I FEEL hunting, shooting etc are bad..." There is a frightening lack of thought or logic there, but plenty of emotion. And Emotion is a very powerful thing.

If you are carrying a concealed weapon for your defense, why would you tell your riders you are carrying?

We all have and are entitled to our opinions, but the idea of flashing your weapon really wont help anything at all. Especially if it escalates the situation. Using deadly force with a concealed weapon is along way from someone expressing their opinion.
