I am in Se Tn. at the local Walmart , it was crowded, and there was a 20+ yr old guy carrying a full size 1911 in a OWB holster, I mean really in plain sight.
But what I noticed most, as he walked about the store nobody even took notice, not customers or store employees. I always carry concealed but that kinda made feel good about the attitudes of folks on guns.

Open Carry section ....

Maybe the staff or lead moderators of THR can set up a seperate section for all these "hey I saw someone open carrying" topics  .

If OC is legal then it's okay.
The debate over if OC is better than concealed will go on until the cows come home, :uhoh: .
If I lived in a OC community, I'd either ignore it or if it was unusual or not common; Desert Eagle .50AE, Chippawa Rhino .357 revolver, S&T 9mm machine pistol, Uzi, etc, I might say; that's interesting :D .

seems odd to me that " You Noticed " and were amazed that other didn't..... is open carry a common occurrence around your neck of the woods...?? in UP state Pa it is a common occurrence but in areas of large cities and surrounding suburbs it is not common...I live in the suburbs of a large city and do not " ever see anyone open carry here and this is an open carry State... when I am up State and hunting I open carry all the time just like the other locals./

Noticed it in the older Memphis Bass Pro Shop, at Syc. View/I-40 a few months ago. This is almost in the suburbs, but maybe not quite.

The gal had an interesting pace to her walk, and if she had been closer, I would have said "I want to complement you on your style".
She reminded me of some ladies I see near some of the horse farms.

It's legal here in Lawrence KS too.

But if you are fool enough to walk into a crowded Walmart store doing it?

60 people would call 911, and your Walmart Greeter would likely be the SWAT team in full Battle Rattle gear!

(Clean-up in aisle 7 please. Clean-up in aisle 7!')

This is a very liberal city, with a very high percentage of gun phonia Sheeple with Smart-phones.

No point in rattling their cage just to prove you can to make yourself feel importent.

There have been WAY TOO MANY active shooter nut-jobs in the country recently.
Lots of people are on edge.

I live in NW Georgia about 1/2 way between Chattanooga and Atlanta and have a lot of family spread out all along the TN/NC border from Chattanooga to the NE corner of the state so I spend a lot of time there. Open carry is fairly common in the north GA area and becoming more so in recent years. I rarely go to Walmart without seeing someone open carrying there.

I haven't noted anyone open carrying yet in TN, but have spotted a few carrying concealed there.

Visited a drug store that sold guns, including NFA items..

Sounds like McCaysville

I haven’t noticed any open carry in my local Wally World, but I have noticed a few in K-Mart and food markets.

And there IS a difference between noticing and making an issue out of it, that apparently did not happen. :)

-feel good about the attitudes of folks on guns.
When people don't see a gun, and don't get an attitude about the gun they never saw, you start to feel good? What?

Can you link to an example of this happening?

That's the narrative from the whitehouse at least. And from you too of course. But mass shootings have been on the decline in the U.S.

It would definitely be more interesting than the "I can't find any .22" thread.

There was an incident a while back about some turd attacking someone who was carrying. Got his gun off him too. Entrance to Walmart.

I don't watch the news either so I'm sure there are plenty of other incidents.

actually active shooter nutjobs are down 40% since the early 1990s.

I live in an open carry state and work in an adjacent open carry state...

In in the last 20 years, I've seen one person open carry... which I find quite odd. But then again... I'm in the populated (liberal) part of both states and it would probably generate a 911 man-with-a-gun call in most places around here.

My personal choice is to carry concealed.... makes me feel sneaky :neener:

Would you call open carrying a .455 Webley Mk VI unusual? When I open carry that's what I most often carry.

rcmodel,

You need to visit the rest of the State (well maybe except for Topeka). Even Wichita is getting comfortable with Open Carry.

And I do not Open Carry to "just to prove you can to make yourself feel importent."

My state is open carry and I live in the ultra conservative corner of the state. I can only think of seeing two people open carrying in town in maybe thirty years and no one including me paid any attention to them. Just noticed it and went on about my business as did everyone else including the open carriers.

I would argue this falls into a couple of categories.

1- I have said for years I could walk around in a bright yellow shirt with pink letters that read "hi, my name is cslinger and I have a cocked and locked .45 caliber pistol at my side. Have a wonderful day!!" And 80% or more of the world would pay no notice if not more. They don't even see me. They are in their world.

2-if the average person sees somebody carrying and that somebody is dressed fairly nicely/normally and is carrying in a nice/applicable holster those folks who take notice are thinking. "Cop". Especially if you are carrying yourself in a nonchalant manner.

Now all bets are off if you dress like a gangbanger, have an Ak slung over your shoulder or look like a reject from the cover of the survivalist and militia monthly swimsuit issue.

Besides this was WALMART a guy with a .45 was likely damn near the LEAST strange, exciting or odd thing that is trolling those isles on a regular basis.

Gun owners who express disdain over open carry are the fifth column against it. We can't get our rights back as long as they stand in the way.

To each his own - others may but I cannot - but as long as we engage in class warfare and continue to denigrate those who peacefully carry in the open, legally, we are only supporting the disarmament agenda.

I'd like to see us stop treating OC as if every participant is loutish white trash with no common sense. They are people just like us exercising their Constitutional civil, legal, and natural rights.

I will say that it already appears some OC to show off their more prized guns - precisely the same as attending a Texas barbecue. Let's be careful setting ourselves up for that, we already have the Rolex rollers who imagine only they wear the superlative watch. Another social tick mark stratifying society into layers of gun owners isn't going to really help.

Gun owners who express disdain over open carry are the fifth column against it. We can't get our rights back as long as they stand in the way.

Our Founding father understood very well that regardless of their personal differences on issues when it came how to resist the Crown of England if arrested they would all hang together.

I think many of the comments against open carry are founded in the belief that the Government should regulate firearms and decide who and who not should be allowed to own firearms. Yet their arguments are the same ones that were (and still are) used against concealed carry and we have several decades of concealed carry in the States to disprove all of the arguments. They have us to believe that exercising a right they don't agree with is wrong and present arguments generally aimed at making people that open carry are stupid, making themselves targets for armed robbers, have poor judgment, are provoking a confrontation., etc. We see name calling such as moron and idiot.

Are there folks who open carry certain weapons in places that I personally believe is poor judgment? Certainly.

How about the guy that was carrying a long gun in a airport recently? Foolish maybe... On the other hand who truly believes the TSA is there to protect them?

Remember the active shooter at LAX, California airport in November, 2013 that killed a person and wounded six others. He was successful because the armed officer had left his post to get something to eat.

Their are folks who believe that firearms don't belong in churches but some churches are doing risk assessments, developing security plans and organizing and training security teams.

I wonder how many realize that the U.S. Government has a official policy of "open carry" in the territorial waters claimed by other nations. Our Government policy is the right of free unrestricted passage and open sea lanes limiting other nations claims for territorial waters to 12 miles. Just to prove our point we regularly send armed warships through these sea lanes particularly to countries hostile to us such as Iran.

I see a guy come into the Wal-Mart I work at OC'ing all the time. He works at an LGS; the only reason I notice is to say hi, and see which one he's carrying.

One of the younger girls at work was alarmed by it; she followed him around the store, watching his right side.

I explained to her that I knew him, and where he works, that OC is legal in WI & always has been, (though some LE still don't know that...... ) and that if anything she should feel much safer with him in the store since I can't carry at work, and he's a dang good shot.

I see alot of OC's here in SE WA from Walmart, Barnes and Noble and right in the doctor's clinic - my clinic. Once I saw a mother bring an infant in and I saw her OC - a nice Springfield XDs. I looked over and said, "Nice gun! Lousy holster!" I advised her as her pediatrician that she needed at least a retention holster. She smiled and we had a good laugh. The other day I also had a father with Sig 290 who also carried it in a simple range holster. I also said the same thing then spent the next many minutes talking about guns.

While a very different case, not similar at all really. This is the best I can do.

The Gulfport Police SWAT team was deployed last weekend to an evacuated Wal-Mart in response to an open carry practitioner allegedly loading and racking a shotgun in front of witnesses in the store.

In contrast to the above story....

Miss. police: Open carry laws kept us from arresting shotgun-toting man who terrorized Walmart shoppers

To the point of the OP, I see OC in Walmart on occasion but not real frequent. There is a guy at work that I don't know real well that OC's every time he goes to walmart, or anywhere else for that matter.
