The S&W 4506 is a great gun, but heavy. I carried one for a few years. My nickname for it was "the boat anchor."

I am going to go off the beaten path on this one. Take a peek at some Smith's. Maybe the S&W 4003...mid size, stainless, safety, reliable. Heavy though. There are quite a few used ones out there and they are relatively inexpensive ($300 range for used.)
