Suggestions for a hunting/target .22 revolver

sal, what sights are you using on the single six?
or, is there some trick to shooting a sixshooter that i don't know?
i'm judging my single ten with 5 1/2'' barrel against the 22/45 with 5 1/2'' barrel.

So, what do y'all think of the 4" barrel Charter Arms Pathfinder?

I am so tempted to give one a try. It is made in matte stainless and per the reviews I've read it has a relatively lighter trigger than some double action rimfire revolvers.

It sure seems like a good candidate for a knock-about rimfire revolver.

When I am testing ammo, I use a rest whenever I can. That takes the human factor out and you are just comparing ammo not shooting ability. The groups I cited are what the gun can do from a rest, not shooting off hand.

Standing with iron sights, about 2" is the best I can generally do @ 50 yards. DanWessonSM-Tgt-1_zps77e040f3.jpg

I have both the Ruger SP101 4" barrel and the Taurus model 94 5" barrel. Both were rough until smoothed out, and are now OK. The Ruger single six I have shoots the best but I am a little impatient for SA.

I got my hands on a single six today and I think I'm sold. I have never had a single action revolver and feel the single six is a great first. Now the question is do I spring for new or look for used.

There are plenty of good Single Sixes out there. I have never bought a new one. All of mine (four or five at this point, I don't remember exactly) I bought used. Just remember what I said. If it has three screws instead of two pins, it is not safe to carry with six rounds in it.

By the way, all my Single Sixes are Three Screws.

Notice that on my Single Sixes the rear sight is adjustable by drifting it left or right in its dovetail. Most of the modern Single Sixes seem to come with a screw adjustable rear sight. And I think there is one that has a groove in the top strap for a non-adjustable rear sight, just like an old Colt.

I would look for a Ruger Single Six, a S&W Model 34, or a S&W Model 17 in the way of an all-purpose hunting/plinking/target shooting/ .22.

This is 1920 6" barrelled 22 ounce Colt Police positive with adjustable sights.
Commonly ~ $400.

My brother is a good shot with a handgun. He had a skunk in a trap. He drove up to 25 feet away, opened the window a little and shot the skunk between the eyes. Then he drove away and came back later.

In the pic, he is shooting a coon up close in the same trap.

Of the revolvers that have been suggested I think that there are only two that really fill the bill. While a 6" barrel will be great for targets as well as hunting due to it's longer sight radius, it might be a bit heavy and unwieldy for a youngster to handle. The 4" double action revolver appears to meet all of the requirements of the OP. The S&W model 18 or the Taurus 990 would be great guns to introduce a youth to shooting with. They are both accurate enough for hunting small game and suitable for plinking at targets. I find that these guns are easier to shoot well than the smaller S&W 63 kit gun or the Taurus 94. I have owned both the S&W and Taurus. I still own the Taurus 990 and it has become one of my favorite all around .22s.

Meh, I'll keep my mk 2. But, I understand the desire for a revolver when teaching a kid. I'd go with a Ruger single action, but that's just me. I like Ruger single actions. If you could find a vintage M17 Smith in good shape for your price range, those things are sweet, I admit. I used to borrow my uncle's a lot when I was in high school in the late 60s. Sweet, sweet revolver.

This was $325.
If you compared to the weight and workmanship of a Ruger or Smith, that seems crazy cheap.
